Japan aims to develop ultrafast wireless technology by 2020

Japan is aiming to develop a super-fast wireless system by the 2020 Tokyo Games that would allow a smartphone user to download three high-definition movies in one second, an official said Friday.

The technology, which is still in its early stages, would use wireless semiconductors, the official of the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry told AFP.

"The chips would use very high frequency bands, called terahertz signals, which could move data at a rate of 100 GB per second. And that would be as fast as downloading three movies in a second," he said.

The ministry wants the technology in place in time for the Tokyo Olympics, he said, adding subcontractors would be recruited to take on the research.

And please, please import this technology to Canada when you develop it.

What does the Olympics have to do with smartphone users downloading movies really quickly?

Ah, this is a government enterprise, as opposed to an initiative from the IT industry. That explains it.

Data transmission is one thing, but how much buffer memory would it need, and how long to write to the memory?

I agree with Wanderlust, having the transmission capabilities is wonderful in itself but could be rendered useless if the average users mobile devices are not capable of receiving, buffering

All those high-frequency radiation flying over our heads!

All those high-frequency radiation flying over our heads!

cell phones use non-ionizing radiation, you should be worried about the really bright object in the sky, the amount of radiation, ionizing and non ionizing it pumps out really is astronomically large, quick put on your tinfoil hat!

High speed wi-fi! bring it on. Much faster SSD's and faster caches will be around in 2020.

But there's no free wi-fi in Japan so it would be useless for tourist coming to see the Olympics. Hopefully things change by then.

Cell Phone implies cell networks or some kind of WiFi replacement be in place that Cell Phones have implemented and be in the hands of people who are visiting the Olympics. You really think that would be a reality in 7 years. 802.11ac is only now stating to catch on, and the new iPhone 5s doesn't even have that.

What about the distance limitations these signals have, like less than 100m. And in some cases only centimeters. Its a stretch to think it will work over distances we've come to expect from our phones.

Your government may also already have or soon to have regulations in place regarding these frequencies.

Good thing is, additional tech associations around the world have already been working on this for a while now. So maybe some kind of world wide standard will come out of this, rather than different fragmented regional standards. That way the person in Canada may actually get a faster network, they need it.
