Why need to counter anyway??
History repeated itself, the American invent something and the Japanese try to build the same thing and sometime little bit better. My other comment for this, this is one of many Japanese way to make great wall from the rest of the world as before.

Anything new and innovative initiative is taken by America. Then followed (even countering the parent technology) and up-gradation by Japan the technological areas so far have been seen. The Japanese have high self-esteem though suffering from inferiority complex.

It doesn't really matter whether America or Japan think of something first - the Japanese have the definite edge on quality. Given the choice between an American product or a Japanese product - I would go for Japanese every time. My youth in the 1970s saw the famous British stationers, WH Smith, stacked with top quality writing paper, pens, calendars, notebooks and pencil cases from Japan. Items my American pen friend sent to me fell to bits in weeks. I have a Japanese car and will continue to buy them. My only other foreign car (a BMW) was a pain in the neck from the day I bought it to the day I got shot of it. An expensive outlay .... so I went back to Japanese. As someone who loves reading and writing - I can only say 'Good Luck Japan' - I look forward to using the end product of your Internet book search system!

Actually I do feel the need for more free and open digitized books in Japanese but, waht's wrong with Project Gutenberg?
