TOKYO —
Mobile carrier KDDI au on Thursday unveiled 12 new mobile handsets for the spring season. The new handsets are made by Sony Ericsson, Hitachi, Toshiba, Casio, Sharp, Panasonic, Kyocera for consumers and HCT for corporate users.
Hitachi’s H001 model features the world’s first 3.1-inch full-wide 3D monitor through which movies and images are shown in 3D format. Sharp’s CA001 model is equipped with high-resolution 8-mega-pixel CCD camera for still images and movies.
The company said the new line-up targets those who wish to use one handset for a long term as well as those who prefer fashionable handsets. The new handsets will be available from Jan 31 nationwide.
Actress Yukie Nakama, 29, appeared at the press conference, and announced she will appear in the company’s new TV commercials, featuring the theme of traditional Japanese and European fairytales “Kaguyahime” and “Little Red Riding-Hood.” She said, “Wearing those old costumes was something like cosplay which I enjoyed.”

Hang on... where is the journalist question asking Nakama if she will be calling anyone special this valentine?

Sony Walkman one looks good. Other ones are just average. They finally made smart phone, but for business use only. So far the only smart phone on Japanese market which still has convenience of e-wallet, access to mobile sites and all other gadgets common to Japanese keitai world is sharp from docomo. I would definitely grab one of those for au if it was ever available.

New phones . . .when no-one has the mney nor the desire to buy them. Clever. Also, where did this woman get that ridiculous looking hat and dress? She sould do with a makeover, just like the phones she is trying to flog.

I am still using my 5.5 year-old SA5505 phone (w/ 2 spare batteries) and I have no plan of retiring this, perhaps until this will be broken beyond repair.
Talk/Email is still my primary usage so I don't bother any brand new handsets.
Perhaps, if I am interested in Japanese Channels, I will be forced to change handsets with ONE-SEG Digital TV. But I am not.
For new subscribers, applying for simple plan (980 yen) will cost each handset more than 400 USD. Applying the plan with handset subsidy, AU will rake your pocket for the expensive per min plan.
For existing subscribers, aside from 3,000Yen processing fee, the exchange price is relatively higher.

My guess is that Yukie Nakama is in 'Spring Fashion' to match the Spring season phone models. Not though she ever does anything for me. She's Ms Bland in my books, and I cannot fathom what others see in her.

It's not even close to Spring yet, though :/ Or is February officially spring here?
I agree with the fact that many phones have needless extras. I'm still kicking with my old Vodafone that has an E->J and J->E dictionary included as a base function, and which switches between English and Japanese interface. Until I can find a model that does that without needing to access the internet, I won't be trading in my battered old phone, luck willing.
I've heard phones now all download those kind of dictionaries, but nobody in a store can seem to give me a straight answer on how it's done and what kind of dictionary you get for your effort. I dont want a self populated dictionary, of course. Anyone heard of a downloadable dictionary App for the average new phone?

The pace of new technology in handsets has reached a plateau because the subsidies have since been removed, whilst at the same time divergence is creating a new model for mobile entertainment. I expect mobile phones to become simple and basic low-cost items yet with a healthier per unit margin for the manufacturers. I think E-Mobile has the best strategy in addressing the high packet revenue netbook market.
