Before docomo used to have a lot of shady unexplained charges in its mobile phone bills, which is why I left the brand more than 12 years ago, and have since adopted AU. From the beginning of this year I started monitoring my mobile phone usage and found the bill charging thousands more than expected. In between I changed my handset in April and while I paid the price of a susidized new handset as asked, i was told that there would be an extra 2100yen service charge with my bill. that was all okay and expected but, in the bill I got the following month I had an extra 5800yen on my bill on top of the 2100, billed as a packet charge. This was impossible because I never access the net on my phone or any other appli or service for that matter and I know I couldn't have done it accidentally because I keep all services locked down with a password access. I subsequently went to AU for clarification and got no help except that I have to pay the amount billed to me. Since then I have been billed in excess of 2000yen monthly on packet charges. i know for sure I do not use that much, I know emails are also measured in packets and I average to about 25-30 emails per month. At 2yen per email it still comes to less than 100yen and even if i have sent pictures on occasion it still doesnt come to the 2000yen+ extra that I am paying.
I have since then purchased a Softbank cellphone and since most of the contacts I call are softbank holders, I have stopped making calls on my AU. I sitll use it because I have had the number for more than 10 years and I am mulling over the decision to switch to Softbank but, a lot of stories coming from that side are not good either.
Although I have a Softbank phone, (I strictly use it between 1am-9pm and to softbank users only. I have never paid more than 980yen/month. The set I chose was a fully subsidized one and I pay nothing for it as long as I agree to use it without switchin for two years. Overall the arrangement (keeping two phones) has saved me more than 8000yen/m in my AU bill.), Aquaintances (mostly Japanese nationals who wre even more meticulous with their calculations) who use Softbank with all the services are also very unsatisfied and constantly complain of overcharging on their bills.
The best solution in my opinion would be to acquire an unlocked 3g handset from HongKong and use it with a softbank or Foma connection. Emails wouldn't work but I guess most of us can do without anyway. (messaging within the same carrier does work in this senario)
I was also very disappointed with my new AU handset also. The set itself is wonderful but its too locked down, I would crack open the OS and make my handset accept non proprietary games and other media, but my new handset from Sanyo is too locked down for me to play with it. I was looking forward to the iphone and in terms of practical usability, it turned out to be a big disappointment I guess I'll have to wait till the end of the year or maybe spring next year for an Android based handset.
thats because their handsets are rubbish!
They have that Lismo and Run and Walk crap that absolutely nobody cares about. Yet they still haven't came up with smart phone. Docomo has blackberry, Softbank has iphone. Au has run and walk? give me a break!
I've been waiting to change my handset for almost half a year, and they still haven't came up with anything suitable.
Your not the only one waiting. I have been asking AU for about two summers if they are getting a smart phone. I was told that they were going to get one this Summer. So I got my wife a new phone and waited. When I saw the new phone collection I was mad. I love the reception I get with Au. I just want a decent phone to use.
From the beginning of this year I started monitoring my mobile phone usage and found the bill charging thousands more than expected.
Which is the exact same reason as to why I am leaving AU in October!!
They have been charging me for all kinds of crap that I don't use and most of which I've never even heard of!!

It's those White Kazoku commercials from Softbank that are cutting away at AU.
"Yabai, yabai."
