KDDI selects NEC, Motorola for LTE mobile network

TOKYO —

NEC Corp and Motorola Inc will provide wireless base stations for KDDI Corp’s next-generation mobile network. The LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard paves the way for cellular communications speeds on a par with fiber-optic lines, enabling users to download a music CD in less than one minute and a two-hour movie in about five minutes.

With an eye toward commercializing the technology in December 2012, KDDI will spend 515 billion yen on related capital investments through the end of fiscal 2014. The cellular service carrier solicited proposals from a wide range of equipment providers, including Chinese and European firms.

It has already selected Hitachi Ltd to build the network’s core infrastructure.

hmm.. interesting, I'm looking forward to this technology, I really hope it succeeds, but.. Motorola??? Eeww... not exactly "cutting edge".

When I was in the US in the 1990's, I was using Qualcomm CDMA-one by Verizon. I don't like to use GSM. When I came here in Japan, I prefer to use the same technology so I chose IDO which is now AU. After more than a decade, AU will go to LTE, the exponent of GSM technology. On 2012, I will transfer to any phone companies who will be using CDMA-2000 (Rev.A/B) or OFDM/WiMax phone.

-- AU's current CDMA-WIN (CDMA-2000 1xEVDO/Rev.A) will not be compatible with LTE. The network overlay will cost them a lot for maintaining two incompatible technologies. Therefore, AU in 2012 and onwards may overcharge thru hidden charges for maintaining expensive infrastructures.

-- If I will be using fiber-optic speed-like wireless technologies, WIMAX/OFDM is the most cost-effective technologies. CATV operators in Kanto, Kansai and Tokai will soon offer WiMAx connectivity.
