KDDI to begin discount campaign for some smartphone users

TOKYO —

KDDI on Monday announced a new discount campaign for some smartphone users who use other KDDI services, such as land lines.

The new service, “au Smart Value,” will begin March 1 for smartphone users who also subscribe to fixed-line communications services of KDDI or its partner firms, such as CATV (cable TV). KDDI said the fee for monthly data communications will be lowered by 1,480 yen (from the current 5,460 yen) for two years.

After two years, a discount of 980 will still apply, KDDI said.

This seems like part of the au two year scam. They tell you you must sign up a two year contract. What they do not tell you is that the contract will be automatically renewed for another two years when it expires. They then charge a hefty contract cancellation fee if you cancel the contract any time other than the 25th month.

actually Softbank and Docomo also have similar rules in place, in the contracts you sign with them.

The bottom line is that whenever you cancel your contract you will be charged close to 10,000yen plus a 3,150 handling fee for the trouble.

They do tell you about it, but it's a scam all right. Ideally if you consider canceling you should change your payment from credit card to cash, then cancel the contract, then refuse to pay cancellation fee.

Not much they can do about it.

I switch carriers each time the contract ends. There isn't a dime's worth of difference between them anyway, except Softbank, which really sucks. Docomo does have slightly better area coverage.
