KDDI to offer free call service for fixed, cell phones

TOKYO —

KDDI Corp said Wednesday it will make domestic phone calls between subscribers to its mobile phone and fixed-line service users free of charge on Aug 1. Phone calls between subscribers to some of its fixed-line services including Internet Protocol phone services will also be free, the company said.

The new pricing system will be in effect 24 hours a day, said the provider of au brand mobile phone services. KDDI hopes the comprehensive discount plan will encourage its mobile phone users to subscribe to its fixed-line services.

Due to the introduction of the new pricing system, KDDI’s revenue is expected to fall by 2 billion yen in the current business year to March 2009. The company said it has already factored in the revenue drop in its earnings estimate.

Most of the household has fixed line in Japan. You can't have internet connection without fixed line.

I have the ability to have a fixed line but not an actual fixed (ie a phone jack without phone service). Explain that farhaan!

    Youdontknow

Yeah fixed lines are all but useless these days other than internet use. These phone companies are gonna have to change the way they do business once the iPhone gets here, especially the new 3G model coming out:

i have fibre cable for internet, dont need a telephone line. my wife and i both have softbank so we dont pay for the mails or calls. honestly, kddi, you are missing the point. why dont you offer free calls between kddi au subscribers. isnt this more beneficial to the users?

Well guys, you need fixed line phone number for many things even if you don't use it. And I think fixed line is very useful as I use my fixed line whenever I have to call fixed line numbers or free dial numbers. I think you people already know that you can call to most of the freedial numbers only with fixed line.
