Konami puts World Baseball Classic in palm of your hand

Do you have a bad case of baseball fever? Konami may have just the right medicine for you. The Japanese digital entertainment giant recently launched the latest title in its Pawafuru Puroyakyu (aka Powerful Pro Baseball) franchise exclusively for the cell phone game market via NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank.

Dubbed Pawafuru Proyakyu ’09 World Baseball Classic, this cell phone app recreates all the excitement from the WBC tournament held earlier this year. The game also brings back all the familiar faces from the 2009 World Baseball Classic, only this time around they’ve been given cute bobble heads and invisible legs that are signature features of this Konami game series.

Players from the 16 national teams who formed the starting lineup of game one in the WBC once again don their original uniforms and take to the field. Just like the tournament, this virtual Classic tries to even the playing field with the same official pitch count and tiebreaker rules. Konami has also managed to leverage the unique features of the cell phone app to enable gamers to download the most recent player data.

The game features two essential modes, “tournament” and “practice.” In tournament mode you select one of the 16 teams and try to slug your way to the top. Practice mode enables you to hone your skills as you go to bat against the computer. It all adds up to some fever-pitch baseball excitement whether you’re at home or away.
