Konica Minolta to produce OLED lighting panel with world's highest-level power efficiency

TOKYO —

Konica Minolta said that this autumn it will start production of an OLED lighting panel with the world’s highest-level power efficiency, to which its own developed organic materials and layer structure have contributed. Konica Minolta has been developing Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) lighting as one of its promising new businesses in the field of environment and energy. The panels will be produced by Philips Technologie GmbH, based in Germany.

OLED lighting features high energy efficiency, relatively low temperature, and reduced environmental footprint since it is mercury-free unlike fluorescent lightings. The lighting is attracting attention as the next generation lighting having such unprecedented features as thin, light weight, and surface light source. Further, OLED lighting technology is mild to eyes and friendly to people, since it is free of ultra-violet rays.

Tangentially related: I just got a Samsung Surge (through Verizon in the U.S.) that has a "Super AMOLED" screen. (I'm supposing "AMOLED" means "amorphous OLED.") Fantastic clarity, brightness and color. And it displays reds! Not dark orange, but real reds!

John, AM stands for "active matrix". the organic semiconductors used for OLEDs are typically in the amorphous state
