This is it to wean Japan from Nuke energy. Whoever start and progress from this, win the energy supply business in Japan. And this is a very lucrative one. Japan now have Softbank and Kyocera building solar powered energy. We better start buying shares from this companies hehehehehehe.

The technical aspect everyone overlooks with solar is it only works during the day and during good weather. You still need a full up operating system to supply power when solar is inop. It is very expensive and difficult to bank power in useable quantities from solar. In effect you end up with three power systems, the solar system, a power banking system and a backup system. It all adds up to a huge initial cost outlay. I see a lot of advocates for diversified power generating which just adds to the cost and clutters the landscape. By the time you get geotherm, solar, wind, nuclear, fossil, and wave power generation going, you have run out of real-estate.

Peak electricity demand occurs during the day: if solar cells can help offset some of that demand fewer power stations will be needed.

Still, I think the solar cells should be put on houses, rather than fields. For Y25 billion this project will supply energy for 22000 households. That works out at Y1.14 million per household, not much cheaper than having your house fitted with cells (around Y1.5 million). You would think they would get better economies of scale than that.

They picked a good place as rural areas of Kyushu are being abandoned and there are plenty of rise fields full of weeds.

Solar is really more economical and productive when used in solar farms. House rooftops pose problems: roof surfaces do not face south, shadows from other buildings and trees, dust and dirt collection, etc

Ignoring the many technical limitations of solar power, does solar even make sense in a country where open land is scarce? How large is this farm in square meters?

Scrote, so true most of the demand is during the day. Industry and Air conditioning, etc. cactusJack, solare on private homes and office buildings might be needed as well. While not a direct solution it would be part of the solution. kurisupisu, Kyshu uses power, not everything revolves around Tokyo!

It should be build in a valley in the mountains and not on rice fields. Japan cannot continue to convert its agricultural lands to industrial property like the Osaka to Kobe. Where will the food come from in 2080?

Japan should build solar power plant in Yamaguchi-Ken or Hiroshima-Ken, where you get over 2000 hours of sunlight per year. It's more inland in Southern Honshu, and avoids typoon and other extreme weather conditions. There are plenty of mountain lands available there.

Am thinking of putting a solar unit on my home in Oklahoma. It will cost 20k American and produce 5k whats of power. Enough to keep my home nice and cool. Heat bothers me since I got heat stroke in the place one should not say.
