FUKUOKA —
Kyushu Electric Power Co is studying a plan to build two large solar power stations on former coal-fired power station sites in Nagasaki Prefecture. One of the envisioned facilities, in the city of Omura, could have an output of about 10,000 kilowatts, making it one of the largest such plants in Kyushu, company officials said.
The other facility is planned for the city of Sasebo. The plans are apparently part of the power company’s program to set up solar facilities that can generate a combined total of 30,000 kilowatts by fiscal 2017. The company earlier announced a plan to build a 3,000-kilowatt solar power station in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture and make it operational by the end of March 2011.

solar thermal or solar panel? There are many ways to make electricity. Given the former plant as coal I'll guess solar thermal as it's easy to determine the megawatt and the steam turbines are already on site. We need to accept a broader definition of the energy source in news items like this one though.
Japan is great for local energy; hot springs, island nation surrounded by water, mountains for pump storage. Lots of easy options that don't pollute with lots of engineers to figure it out

Does Japan have geothermal plants? It seems like a much more obvious way to generate green power without the expense of solar electric panels. :-7
