With the internet, news have become a major source of mis-understanding and mis-information which can mis-guide many people.

Now more NEWS becomes available at "personal" level "direct' from the "source". It will become much more "selective" and "based on personal preferences" in a major sense. However, it also means all information disseminated will be much more "controlled" and "designed" supposedly to meet that user's personal needs.

The major problem with any news or media released information is that it has a producer and director as well as editors. That means regardless of the claims that all is factual and truthful it has been "created" and have specific purpose and direction as well as intent.

So now, we will see not just the media "controlling" the minds of people usually indirectly through broadcasting, but the new digital direct from source to user method is opening up to possible misuse and "brainwashing". Much like the "subliminal" messaging used in advertising, now that is possible to direct it to a specifically targeted individual user.

That is because any "discussion" and alternative thinking can be manipulated and controlled.

How will the people protect themselves? How will governments control that.

Kazetsukai, I agree mostly. Yes, "news" organizations can blur reporting with commentating and sometimes do so deliberately. Some news organizations are sounding boards for political parties who do not report on what happened but rather report on how we, the reader, should interpret what happened.

However, given a choice between more sources of news or fewer sources of news, I would take more sources.

I'm trying to predict where this new MS news group will be on the political spectrum. FOX news and MSNBC are typically viewed as opposites, the first being representative of conservative and republican views, the second of liberal and democrat views. Maybe MS will try to be more centric?

Interesting how MSNBC is liberal news in the USA while MSN Sankei is conservative news in Japan. Was Microsoft just trying to get into news in any way possible and not really caring about partiality of its partners? The political views are the opposite at those two sites while they are both run in some way by Microsoft...
