yeah, I think I'll wait until at least the first barrage of inevitable 'bugs' are fixed.

wait for 7.1 haha... Ubuntu Linux runs the latest software on old hardware though or otherwise get a Mac, no point in using Windows anymore unless you love scanning your harddrive every time you boot up and reinstalling every few months.

in my office, on a similar speck hardware between mac g5 leopard and dell win7 beta build 7100.
win7 start up way faster than mac. and it ready for work almost right a way. it still do the hd scanning but very brief lest than 30sec.
that is just my everyday use of both system. as for linux, it can't run many of my graphic software. too bad it isn't an option for me!

My Ubuntu Linux on a regular bootup completes in 15 sec. Always. After 50 times mounting the drive it does a drive check. Thus that ends all the excitement of my bootup possibilities.
Proprietary graphic software... it's a bit of chicken and egg isn't it? The company(companies) won't make software ports to Linux (which are far less technically difficult to do) because a majority of their customers use Windows. Customers still use Windows because the graphics software they want to use isn't available on Linux. Mix. Repeat.
Please consider sending the nice graphics software company an email asking them when their Linux release is due out because you want to associate your secure operating system with their software? Even if you have no intention of switching, it helps push the idea into corporate chuckle-heads and maybe even break the cycle.

yeah ubuntu is fast on even a very low speck machine. i also got it on one of my vritualbox.
i would really love to use linux base machine for real, but the graphic software's capability is the holdback part.
i don't have much hope unless somebody sue adobe! ha that would be fun to see.

It's about the business: people will use what their workplaces use because that could help them earn more money from work. If Apple and Linux can get more inroads at people's workplaces, people will follow.

But are PC companies ready for Windows 7?
And what of the poor computer users who will inevitably have to go through another cycle of upgrades and fixes?
Not such good news ....... for those that did NOT upgrade to Windows Vista, a nightmare awaits them...

So, will I need to change from Internet Explorer 6 to Windows 7 to connect my printer to my modem?

I had to rename a bunch of photos and sort them by date. In linux this can be accomplished by a single command line with a 2 or 3 commands mixed together. Windows can't do this as easily.
Yes it comes down to business. Once the demands of business are there and they accept the business model (google The Cathedral and The Bazaar) of Redhat and Debian then it'll just fly.
But it really won't change until there is a serious security breach in Windows that costs a company millions when linux would not have. Given enough losses there will be new interest.
By then Ubuntu and other linuxes will have improved enough to accept those rejected by Windows.

BTW the benchmarks of Windows 7 are quite good. It does beat Ubuntu in some cases but not all. What's more interesting is that a free system made up of volunteers from around the world is equal to a pricey product from a multibillion megacorporation. The competition is looking good and keeps both sides honest

sf2k,
One of my closest friends from college is the creator of slackware. I'm going to email your comment to him. I'm sure it will make his day.
Thanks.
