Mitsui Mining develops low-cost catalyst for diesel vehicles

Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co has developed a catalyst to purify exhaust gas from diesel engines that uses silver, rather than much costlier platinum. The new catalyst, which has particle matter purification efficiency equal to platinum conventionally used, can reduce precious metal costs by 90% or more, Mitsui Mining said.
Silver has not been used as a catalyst material because of its poor heat resistance. But Mitsui Mining said it has succeeded in making silver withstand heat of up to 800 degrees centigrade by adding metal composite oxide. The catalyst is undergoing performance evaluation tests, the company said.

Such a pity the brilliant Mitsubishi engineers could not continue the work of Garrett who in 1935, in the USA, already had patented in-car-produced hydrogen. I ask, in an age when a digital color TV picture can be sent back from the planet Mars, why cannot these brilliant engineers efficiently split a water molecule? (This had already been done 70 years ago anyway). Maybe somebody is paying them NOT TO do this research. I wonder who that could be. Meanwhile we choke, and kill the planet. Thanks to Mitsubishi and all the other automobile engine manufacturers for ignoring the elephant in the room..
