Mobile phone calls top fixed-line calls in FY '07

TOKYO —

Mobile phone calls accounted for 44.8% of total telecommunications traffic in terms of hours in Japan in fiscal 2007, topping fixed-line phone calls for the first time ever, government data showed Friday. The share of fixed-line phone calls, excluding Internet Protocol phone calls, was 43.3%, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

In fiscal 2006, the share of mobile phone calls was 5.7 percentage points lower than that of fixed-line phone calls. But mobile calls gained the upper hand in the following year, which ended in March, as Softbank Mobile Corp launched free call services between its subscribers and other mobile carriers moved to cut call rates further.
