NEC to boost mobile handset shipments

TOKYO —

NEC Corp aims to boost its domestic mobile phone shipments to 10 million units in fiscal 2010, winning a market share of least 20%, Executive Vice President Akihito Otake said Monday.

In fiscal 2008 that ends in March 2009, the major Japanese electronics maker expects to raise its handset shipments to seven million units as it is starting supplies to Softbank Mobile Corp, a mobile phone carrier under the wing of Softbank Corp. NEC plans to launch eight handset models in the first half of fiscal 2008, up from four in the second half of fiscal 2007.

In fiscal 2007, NEC’s domestic mobile phone shipments fell to 4.8 million units from the previous year’s 5.6 million units, with its market share slumping to 9%.
