Thank goodness! 4.7 inches is about the limit of pocket comfort.

A case would make it even bigger....how is that going to fit into my hipster jeans pockets? Will my tiny hands be able to hold it, will I have to move my head constantly from left to right and back when reading a text? Will they use a new revolutionary connector? Is Samsung going to sue us for using a size they introduced 6 years ago? Tough times ahead for the flock....

Buy the Samsung Note 3 with 5.7" screen and 13 megapixal camera. You don't have to wait for nice smartphone.

the 5-inch screen on my Android handset is da' bomb. Dont really need a tablet or even a Kindle. So it's nice to know iPhone users will eventually get the benefits I've enjoyed for about a year already. Welcome to the club!

Here's why the iPhone up till now have such small screens: the late Steve Jobs' insistence that you can operate most of the functionality of the iPhone with one hand. As such, that's why the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5S and 5C all have screens of the same common width (based in holding the screen in portrait mode). It is believed that the iPhone 5 was the last iPhone model that Jobs had a hand in its design, a design that was probably finalized just after Jobs' untimely passing.
With the circa 4.8" screen being planned for the iPhone 6, that's why Apple may be working on a near bezel-free case design so the majority of the phone's functionality can still be operated with one hand. This means the case of the phone is not much bigger than the screen itself.

The design will be a winner, as always. But I doubt many Apple users will feel comfortable with a larger case.

I just did an experiment with my 5-inch Android handset after reading your post. My thumb is actually able to reach over to the far side of the screen and I don't have big hands, meaning this can also be operated with one hand.
The problem for all handsets, however, is the screen's vertical dimension. The thumb's movement is much more restricted. Going from top to bottom of the screen requires shifting the handset in one's hand.
