Nintendo needs to do this to stay competitive, even if it does not have HD. But it also needs to do this worldwide, and not just in Japan, and make the offerings available worldwide.

Don't knock Nintendo. I have had some dealings with them over the years and some of their employees are very smart customers indeed. I would imagine that this is only the tip of the ice-berg.
