Poor old Nintendo thought the iPhone and smartphone gaming posed no threat to them. FAIL.

The new handheld machine, which also takes 3D pictures and will eventually offer 3D movie streaming

Welcome to 2009, new handheld machine.

Hey Nintendo, I am a middle age customer. First of all, the games are too complicated. I don't have 45 hours to master a level. Second, I don't need 2 screens, that just complicates things and hurts my eyes. Third, nobody wants 3D. Even my junior high kid doesn't like it.

I read somewhere that the #1 use of the iPad is for gaming.

Sort off have to agree with RonaldK.

There don't seem to be much interest in the 3DS from kids here, the 3D effect is so-so. Also your hardware and games are too pricey when compared with other consoles and handhelds.

Plus, how about some new game-titles for a change. Even the kids are getting bored with Pokemon, Super Mario and so on.

Most of the kids here sold their DS and went for the PSP over X-Mas, my son can get the same titles as he plays on my PS3 for his PSP. My son sold his Wii and DS to buy the PSP last year when the 3DS was announced.

I don't think the 3DS will be a flop, but I don't think it's going to be saving Nintendo. I agree with ronaldk about the 3D but not the rest of it - the 2 screens are quite useful on many games, and there are tons of easy, casual games plus games that have more depth. There are markets for both!

I notice much fewer people playing either PSP or DS on the trains these days. The smartphones aren't going to kill the handhelds anytime soon but they will drastically cut into the sales of these machines...

    Smorkian.

There are too many Nintendo fans(as well as apple fans) out there to make a new product launch a flop.

Agree that smart-phones will take over from handhelds eventually, reason why Sony already announced their new device which basically is a Phone with psp capabilities/controls.

BTW, know slightly off-topic but how is Kinect doing for Microsoft now, there seems to be less local interest in it than the 3DS.

What did they expect? The Wii doesn't even offer HDMI graphics gaming. Not very smart when many gamers have 40', 50' and even 60' HD flat panel televisions.

    Adding to what American_Bengoshi sez.

PS3 has Blue-Ray and 3D Support standard. That alone allows for better graphics and larger game-play. Add in a Torne and an external HDD it will also work as a HDD recorder.

Still waiting for BioShock 3D here. ;)

I think it would be very strange indeed to call the Wii anything other than a massive, huge, amazing success. They've sold almost 2x as many Wiis as either 360 or PS3. But the Wii is aging, so is the original DS - hence the 3DS and the new Wii next year.

The no-HD issue is really only a problem for a relatively small segment of the market. The people who are playing Wii Bowling don't care if the graphics are HD.

Profits are down but profits are still good. I don't see much doom and gloom as Nintendo are still selling so many units and bringing in so much money. Sure it isn't as much as last year but that doesn't mean it isn't a profit still. No company can continually increase profits year after year.

this is to ronaldk: everyone in my house including me (thats 6 people) had no problem with the two screens maybe you have an eye condition and second its not complicated at all! Maybe you should go back to playing asteroids or pacman you know, something more simple because apparently ds is too complicated...

as for the 3ds? I think it will sell better mainly because of all the software they have on it Resident evil: the mercenaries, Resident evil: Revelations, Metal Gear 3d, Mario Kart 3d, Paper Mario, Mega man legends 3, if those all arent enough reasons I dont know what the hell people want. as for the NGP (sony's new handheld) are you really going to pay about 300-400 dollars on a handheld game system? (not to mention its solely digital that means you ALLWAYS pay full price for games since there will be no used games and then that also means no refunds so you better do your research good and not buy a crappy game and hope that thier network wont get hacked and shut down for 4 days AGAIN) >
