I'm not really sure I get this as "the big new thing" with Nintendo. They've had companies making stuff for years outside of "traditional mediums" (Tomi-Car, plushies, shirts etc). Heck, they have had Nintendo-Land in the works for a year or so at USJ.
Rather, I think this means they are considering utilizing their characters on non-nintendo platforms like Sega did when they gave up on platforms altogether.
Anyway, good on them..but we should remember they're coming from a history where they have been severely burned by companies mishandling their IPs in the past (see Legend of Zelda for PC and that Mario movie...)
