TOKYO —
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp said Monday it recorded a group net profit of 282.24 billion yen in the first half of fiscal 2009, down 30.5% from a year earlier, due partly to sluggish earnings at its mobile phone service division. In the April-September period, NTT also booked an operating profit of 646.77 billion yen, down 13.2%, on a 3.2% drop in operating revenue to 4,998.11 billion yen.
The mobile phone service division incurred a 16% drop in operating profit on a 5.4% decline in revenue, NTT said. The long distance and international telecommunications service division saw its operating profit and revenue decrease 7.6% and 3.1%, respectively. But the local telecommunications service division boosted its operating profit by 24.6% on reduced operating costs, more than offsetting a 3.5% decline in revenue.

I reckon if they dropped their prices they would make more money. Long distance domestic calls are so expensive so lots of people (me included) find ways round that - everyone knows about Skype and MSN but also how about buy your mother (in law) a mobile on the same provider and get free family calls... Not sure if NTT has such a plan but I'm guessing they do as AU and Softbank do
