some experts worry that Apple’s strength could become a weakness. Apple makes more money from iPhones than any other product, including its iPods, iPads and Mac computers. That could leave it vulnerable as the overall smartphone market shows signs of slowing growth, warned BGC Partners analyst Colin Gills, who noted in a recent report that Apple depends on iPhones for nearly two-thirds of its revenue.

Someone always has to try to find something negative. Here we are in a report that Apple broke records on iphone sales in the quarter, and someone is screaming 'yeah, but they may fail in the future!'. How about we cross that bridge when we come to it.

Excelent results. Those who bought Apple shares one year ago bet in the winner horse. I still remember when the iPhone 4S was launched, breaking records at the time, that analysts said the same thing ¨Superb!! But can Apple still innovate?¨ Yes, it can, as the 5, 5S and now the 6 all have been huge hits, bigger than its predecessor. I don't doubt the 6S this year, and then the 7 in 2016 will break records too.

But can Apple still innovate?

Uh no. The huge amounts of iphones sold are not due to innovation, they are the logical result of building a non compatible system. Trying to move to another system is soooo stressful, apple did a great job with that. All those folks longing for a bigger phone finally got their wish when Apple decided that it was time for them to decide that the crowd was ready for it. Instead of of going through the hassle of exporting i-messages, etc etc most people just caved in and got the 6.

That would make sense for people not moving away from Apple, but how do you explain the people who move to it? And how is this different from Android or Windows - they are not compatible with other systems either, and therefore users face the same limitations in moving from these platforms as they do in moving from IOS.

This news must really be irritating to Apple's detractors.

well done Apple pretty stunning results. The thing I raise an eyebrow at is the profit $18 Billion? that is a heck of a lot of profit, even if every iphone was $100 cheaper, they still would have a made a huge profit. The people need a little more than a free U2 album, throw them a bone. Share the love. Tim Cook doesn't need a new private Jet ;)

So that's why sales in China are up 70%. People who have never owned an iPhone. I think the main reason for selling 75 million iPhones is that people who had to suffer Android phones because they liked big screens, could now upgrade to a better phone with a real OS.

Funny how Chinese brands like Xiaomi are starting to make a big name for themselves outside the motherland.

Not really. They make a low margin in China; mostly by copying Apple. Not really respected outside of China. And Apple sold more phones than they did in China last quarter.

Copying Apple? Their OS is an Android fork, not related to iOS in the slightest.

Not really respected outside of China.

Not at all true. They sell very well in the rest of Asia (outside Japan) and even are being sold in Japan now.

And Apple sold more phones than they did in China last quarter.

So?

http://thehackernews.com/2014/08/xiaomi-phones-secretly-sending-users.html

... Security Researchers from F-Secure Antivirus firm has shown that the Xiaomi phones (RedMi 1S handset) send quite a lot of personal and sensitive data to "api.account.xiaomi.com" server located in China, including following information: IMEI Number of your phone, IMSI Number (through MI Cloud), Your contacts and their details, Text Messages ...

Kenny Li of Hong Kong forum, IMA Mobile, recently noticed something odd with its Redmi Note smartphone. He discovered that the device continued to make connections with IP addresses in Beijing, China. The device kept trying to make the connection, even after switching off the company's iCloud-like MiCloud service.

Although it was pointed out that the transmissions occur only over Wi-Fi, though the device does stay in contact with the servers via small "handshakes" while using cellular data. Li then tried erasing the version of Android and installed a new version of Android, But the problem still persisted. ...

As if Apple/Google/your provider aren't doing the same already.

So?

So, that China customers helped Apple to be this 178 billion richer. If that's a ¨so?¨ to you, then give me your salary. You understand nothing about value of money.

By all means, patronize Xiaomi if you like, at least they're providing free backups ... getting restore points from behind the Great Firewall may prove problematic, though ...
