Sanyo develops semiconductor laser with highest output for Blu-ray disc recorder

OSAKA —

Sanyo Electric Co said Friday it has developed a blue-violet semiconductor laser diode that can deliver the world’s highest optical output for Blu-ray disc products. The company plans to start mass production of the 450-milliwatt laser diode in two or three years.

The new laser diode allows a four-layer Blu-ray disc to be recorded at 12 times faster than real time. At present, the maximum speed is six times real time with a double-layer disc. A recording speed of 12 times real time would allow a two-hour film to be copied in 10 minutes.

Surely we're going to be able to pick a film off line and simply run it from cyber space, no hardware needed.
