Anything has to be better than Japanese chalk rice.
I would like to see them develop a rice that the outside cannot be taken off.

The human digestive system might have trouble with rice with an outer layer that cannot be taken off.

They need to develop a variety of rice that needs less time under water. Rice cultivation is one of the world's biggest producers of greenhouse gasses, namely the methane from rotting vegetation in the flooded rice paddies.
