it only worked on iphones no other idevices
gogogo
It doesn't work and don't know anyone that has made it work, it just a hoax from 4chan I think.
sf2k
seems like an obvious QA task the check. Too many co-op students

Not a hoax. Bing it. (for those who fear the Google).
The glitch is verified.

This is not the correct text actually This is an old version that provided similar functionality back in iOS6 days. I know most news outlets are posting that this is the code causing the issues but they are uninformed. The current text looks like this: http://jailbreaky.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/malicious-text-e1432704058975.png

The quality of Apple software gets worse and worse.

Testes, correct.

I really don't like Apple or their products but everyone lets glitches get through once in a while.

It maybe caused by Google app on Apple phone. If it has happen to you. Did your phone have any google app uploaded on your iPhone ?
smithinjapan
Who cares even if it does work if all that comes as a result of it is that your phone restarts? If it shut the phone down permanently, or caused other problems, then it would be serious. Other than being a minor irritant I don't see what the big deal is.
John-San
You loss all your info if you restart it, contacts, music and application if you restart. Not a minor irritation. a Big problem if you do run icloud.
clamenza
John - according to the story above, smith is right. A minor irritant that probably affected 10 people worldwide
wtfjapan
every time theres a problem with Apple products, the fanboys are in such denial its laughable. couldnt be Apple must be another company that supplies Apple. lol
Frederic Bastiat
This particular glitch may only cause a crash/reboot, but it may point to a future, much more malicious situation.
clamenza
wtfjapan - where are these plethora of problems you talk about? Ive owned iPhones for 6 years now and had exactly zero problems. man, the lunatic/nerd element really get emotional when it comes to Apple. Why is that? (again, I'm not a 13 year-old girl, so i won't bother ending w the prerequisite "lol!")

On the contrary, with every new version of iOS, it keeps getting better. It also gets more secure, as evidenced by the fact that it takes jailbreakers longer and longer to figure out how to jailbreak each new update, and I'd imagine we'll get to a point where a new version is released before an older version is able to be jailbroken.
As for this specific issue - it's a weird bug. Anyone who has ever built or financed a software bug knows things like this can happen. It's not specific to apple, or any programming language.

It seems expensive but cheap in quality. :-

Technical details on the bug (apparently it's in a module of the CoreText API and applies to iOS and OS X; TheReg reports it also affects iWatches and iServers):
