Sony, Toshiba to cut TV recycling rate

TOKYO —

Major Japanese electronics makers Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp plan to lower the recycling charge for cathode-ray tube television sets with 15-inch or smaller screens from Nov 1. The move is aimed mainly at encouraging recycling at a time when an increasing number of consumers are expected to replace TVs toward the switchover from analog terrestrial TV broadcasting to digital services in July 2011.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co has already announced a similar recycling rate cut.

Sony and Toshiba will lower the recycling rate for 15-inch or smaller CRT TVs to 1,785 yen per unit from 2,835 yen, while the rate for larger models will be kept unchanged at 2,835 yen.

Toshiba will also reduce the recycling charge for compact refrigerators with a capacity of 170 liters or less to 3,780 yen from 4,830 yen and that for home-use air conditioners to 2,625 yen from 3,150 yen.

What happens when applicances get recylced? Recycle = reuse, right? Then why do we have to pay them to do it?

n3312, you might want to read this > http://www.informinc.org/japanepr.pdf

From that same tract, "Recycling fees are transmitted to manufacturers monthly. They are intended to cover the costs associated with operating the regional consolidation centers, transporting products to recycling facilities, and recycling itself. However, it is important to note that these fees are insufficient to cover all the costs of recycling and that manufacturers are responsible for the remaining costs."

There's another article about recycling in today's Japan Today about cellphones and other small appliances (digital appliances and consumer goods).

It would appear there are products which are desirable to recycle and others that nobody wants, such as old television sets.

Very misleading title. Couldn't a different word have been chosen instead of the ambiguous 'rate'?
