I don't really understand why more people are buying these tablets rather than proper PCs. I can't imagine myself for example using my 3D modelling software and graphics packages on a device like that. I need the power that a PC can provide as well as the RAM.

Not everyone needs those full powers on a mobile device. Tablets are not a replacements for a full development machine.

Most us them to keep connected, for Demoes and similar. Current tablet specs are enough for your average user.

What I noticed the last few weeks, new tablets are getting even cheaper. Tablets around $100 are selling especially quite well. Those tablets below $100 are pretty much very basic, but it's a good starter tablet for those people who are not familiar with tablets ($80 7" tablets running Android4 holiday-discounted for half-price). Those are flying off the shelves (people coming into shop and picking up multiples of it) - for that price, people don't mind having a starter tablet.

Those tablets just above $100 are robust enough to do what most people use their tablets for. As tablet technologies become better, people don't need to spend half a grand to do stuff that they normally do. Before, yes spending that much was the only way to get decent tablets. But now even cheaper tablets have faster CPUs, more RAM, better cameras, brighter screens - that's enough for what most people use their tablets for. Tablets are more becoming a commodity, not a luxury item.

I don't really understand why more people are buying these tablets rather than proper PCs.

Now that other companies besides Microsoft are releasing tablets running Win8.1 (not RT) and for much cheaper prices than the MS Surface, more of those tablet PCs are selling too. Dells and ASUS can be had for around $300 before discounted sales. Plus with the release of MS Surface 2, consumers are more at ease that MS will continue to support it (and not abandon it like Zune), so even though Surfaces are still expensive, those are selling more as well, plus due to improved CPU, graphics, and importantly longer battery life.

Those tablets still wouldn't run heavy PC software (wouldn't want to run those in small screens anyways), but can run most other PC programs people regularly use.

For normal daily use, I agree that a laptop PC is more practical and functional. But short trips, a tablet can be pretty convenient for tapping out a quick email or SMS, play games, or to surf the web.
