This AI stuff sound mind blowing!

Surely no one imagines Musk is the first to consider augmentable brains? It's been around since microchips were first invented. There was lots of talk of this back in the 1970s.

we really need to get off this merry-go-round if we want to remain human beings

"Neural laces" feature in the science fiction novels of Iain M Banks. Their purpose in the novels is not so much to "keep up" but to be looked after by benevolent "minds" that are far more advanced than "mere AIs". His novels are worth reading. They contain a subtle humor that I often find lacking in science fiction.

The concept of artificial intelligence reaching a human level of intelligence is known as the singularity. When it arrives, humanity will no longer be the only known intelligent form of life in the universe. How long before we are replaced as the dominant form of intelligence on the planet?

humans will need to implant “neural laces” in their brains to keep up

That's not quite what he said. He actually stated 'humans will need a direct neural interface...with computers' to compete with AI.

"Intelligence" is a loaded word. With a programmed goal, any microcomputer today is vastly superior to humans at calculating an answer - yet vastly inferior to the simplest insect at creating an outcome. The difference, I suspect, is will - the genetically-imposed drive living creatures all possess to procreate and do all that ancillary stuff this requires. Until machines are able to derive will, they are nothing but more efficient machines - but if and when they do, well, they'll either be our best buddies or the end of mankind.

And where are the organizations to stop this? To stop and redirect the misguided miscreants who insist on being traitors to their own species?
