"She knew of no cyber attacks aimed at Tesla cars"

Until you decided to paint a big target on Tesla by taunting hackers to come try. Could they have not done this behind closed doors?

Better to have a bunch of hackers on your side trying to find security holes, than malicious hackers trying to find them without your knowledge.

It will cut out all computer functions and leave us will a normal steering wheel, brakes, etc.

But then we'll have to know how to drive. That might become a problem.

What you are referring to is known as 'security through obscurity', which is not true security.

Better to let people know you are willing to pay them to help you with any security holes they find. Now hackers know that if they bring Tesla a security hole within their system, they can get paid for it.
