2 years ago, Toshiba-Sandisk alliance was spearheaded in order to compete head-to-head with the the world's no.1 flash memory maker, SAMSUNG. They built a gigantic fab in Mie Prefecture two years ago. Recently, according to major Japanese newspapers, they halted and postponed the plan of doing full-scale production.

I went to Akihabara a few days ago and 16GB of SD cost only 2,500yen. With this market price, not only Toshiba will go in the red-ink but the whole flash-memory/semiconductor companies. Tho whole semiconductor companies will eventually downsize in order to stabilize the market price.
