U.S. trade body rules in favor of Sharp over LCD patent case

OSAKA —

The U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea infringed Sharp Corp’s patents for liquid crystal display-related technologies, Sharp officials said Wednesday. In the ruling, the ITC banned exports to the United States of Samsung’s LCD televisions and other products manufactured using the Osaka-based firm’s patented technologies, the officials said.

The ITC found Samsung to have infringed Sharp’s four patents related to technical expertise used to improve LCD image resolution. The decision was made Monday following the ITC’s provisional decision in June in favor of Sharp. Also in June, Sharp was slapped with an ITC ruling that it violated Samsung’s LCD-related patent rights.
