too tough for comments here, I may leave one ... For economies of scale, Hitachi knows how to earn marginal profits with Western Digital in developing new technologies of hard-drives, not only for computers, but also other storage formats for handheld devices ... 5% of $750 million may be ... a nice ...

It is a pity Hitachi hard drives (HGST) that they got sold off, but for some reason I knew it was bound to happen, they needed to improve the designs a little more, the drives themselves are fine, but some have complained that its slightly slower then the competitors thats not to say they arent as reliable, m&a can damage competition and innovation at the same time, WD is in the top position really, they didnt need to take over a weak company, considering hgst sales were very low, only one year warranty, though from hgst's perspective, they made a profit off the sale, when they bought the division from ibm, the sale was marked at around the 2-3 billion

these Microdrive (IBM) hard drives were initially used in the iPod mini 2G/4G and had to take alot of vibration and shock being a handheld device. Now a 4Gb memory card/stick can be had for $15 -can't make a hard drive at that price. Cheapest hard drive usually $50 and profit at that point is doubtful. $100 or more is much better.
Probably still use these 8Gb Microdrives in laptops etc.
Hitachi large HDs are very good if not the best longterm. I have Hitachi DVD RWs (laptop the best) that are exceptional also. NewEgg is the best for feedback on this stuff.
