GENEVA —
The World Trade Organization has given Japan until Sept 1 to amend its punitive charges on imports of South Korean computer chips.
A WTO arbitrator has said this gives Japan a reasonable period of time to recalculate its import tariffs to conform with global trade rules.
Seoul took Japan to the WTO over a 27.2% charge Tokyo levies on imports of dynamic random access memory made by South Korea’s Hynix Semiconductor Inc. DRAM chips are used as components in computers and other high-tech products.
The arbitrator’s decision, published on Monday, follows a WTO panel ruling in November that found that Japan incorrectly calculated the tariff but stopped short of ordering Tokyo to scrap the fees outright.
