I dont remember my Sega Megadrive (Genesis), Gamecube etc ever having any of these issues.
Is it because the technology is becoming more complicated that these issues are now pretty hard to foresee, or are the companies just slacking off in their testing phases?

too much crap crammed into one box. Who really wants to watch netvideos, movies, family photos, youtube, facebook, music and whatever else over a game console. It's not eco, takes forever to boot up, not very quiet, has fiddly controls and just can't beat a device designed for a specific purpose. Take WDTV which is a small box that can do everything except play games at a fraction of the cost. You smartphone or pc hooked up to your AV system and TV is probably easier to use, quicker and cost effective. The LCD TV will probably dominate the living room in the next few years even more than it does today, so the game consoles really just need to concentrate on providing exceptional games and delivering a great experience. I won't be playing a movie or music on my console nor flicking through photos. I do however expect the consoles to hook up seamlessly with your smartphone and tablet to make life simpler.

The risks of consoles becoming more powerful and complicated - and boats load more being bought on launch day, ergo bad batches.
