hoserfella at 08:24 AM JST - 30th July
who was the marketing genius who came up with this one? How many Japanese has he or she met who have pined for visiting...Salt Lake City!?

How else did you think all those Mormon missionaries get out here? : P

The Swine flu virus has nothing to do with it. I don't know how they did their research on this one, but who has the true desire to go there? If they wanted to market the destination then they should have the state of Utah as a backup and try and do tourist campaigns in Japan for this. I know there are a few companies that link Utah and Japan but not enough to justify direct flights.

Salt Lake is a big hub for Delta's west coast operations, that's all. But why would you fly to the west coast via SLC when you can do it non-stop with other carriers?
timeon at 12:04 PM JST - 30th July
after my horrible experience with Delta a few years ago, I will never ever consider that company again (7 hours delay, luggage coming after 3 days, 2 big cracks in the suitcase, charging $5 for a 330 mL beer, the only food option left from the 3 menus was chicken, which I can't stand, arrogant flight attendants). I wanted to fill a complaint, but I was too much pain in the ***, and I didn't have that time

But you have the time to whine to us about it!!

maybe he hopes that the Delta flight attendants are regular JT readers...

by december they'll be down to two a week

bgaudry, and you really think that sending them an e-mail helps? if they are regular JT readers, I just wanna remind them that their service is even worse than Airflot! as impossible as it seems
bgaudry at 05:18 PM JST - 30th July
Yeah, they are much more likely to be reading this, than checking their email and replying to customers' complaints/queries.

Except to access Utah's ski areas, why would Delta bother to have a Tokyo-SLC route? Can't imagine Temple Square being a big tourist attraction for the Japanese.

Delta installs video games with touch screens in the back of the seats. I was prodded unmercifully by people in back of me with game addictions in both directions. It was the most uncomfortable sleepless flight I've ever taken, all totally unnecessary but for the stupidity of the person who spent millions of dollars to procure those stupid things, and I will absolutely never fly that carrier again, even if I have to go to the US west coast via Mumbhai, Nairobi and Lisbon next time.

SLC actually paid DL several million to keep the route. SLC has a lot of connections to the smaller towns in the west that might be hard to get to from traditional TPAC destinations like LAX. So they view it as good business.
The Mormons also like have direct flights to Asia. With a direct flight to NRT most destinations that are 1-stop away.
I think the route runs on A330 metal, so it's really NWA that's operating the flight. NWA is the third biggest carrier in NRT behind JAL and ANA.

I love Salt Lake City. It has great interest points nearby, the skiing is some of the best, and the mountains are beautiful.
