Selecting China as the host for the Olympics is daunting. China is a nation that represses freedom of speech, religion, movement and who has the world's leading execution rate. Further it is a nation that threatens neighboring sovereign states and occupies another. And it is a nation with an increasingly divided economic platform that establishes a very wealthly priviledged class and a vast underclass of poor laborers.

So is it any wonder people are staying away? There are a lot of Japanese who understand the issues within China and are not going because they do not wish to support the Chinese state.

A few weeks ago Japanese TV showed a poor farming family with no crops this year. They said the water had been diverted to the Olympics by the state. While one old guy said he was happy to support the nation's needs, two other working women came forward to say that they didn't know how they would survive without their crops. They were angry and worried.

China should not have been selected and I hope that more and more people will not only cancel or not buy tours to the Olympics, but will boycot the broadcasts and sponsors as well.

Does the package include a visa? If not probably best staying at home.

On a positive side their sales are up over 100% on Athens and if you can get a visa Beijing hotels are dropping in price (probably the real reason ANA can drop the package price).

And FairAndBalanced - they do wnat to go and see the best in the world at certain sports like Judo, Swimming and Wrestling so what's your beef? If you were British would you want tickets for Baseball? Of course not!

tkoind2, that was very well put & I back you all the way. I to felt that giving the Olympic to China was a BAD mistake. So my credit to you for standing up with said comment & outlook.

If we were to ever meet I feel we would see many things in the same manner.

Air ain't that much cleaner in Japan. Everytime I arrive I get asthma and allergies. I am lucky i'm not allergic to cedar pollen. Trash and leaf burning in Japan releases tons of dioxins into the air, and into nearby crops...

i wanted to be there during the olympics but couldnt make it. I was a few blocks from WTC on 911 so i dont think anything could be worse than that. knock on wood.

I read an article yesterday where hotels in Beijing are cutting their prices as well because of the unexpected low turn out for reservations.. Hey we are looking at the country that tries to control all.. Should it be any surprise?? Actually I am a little surprised, but I believe it is only right and finally people are showing their discontent with what China stands for.

And this is not about the people of China.. it is about the face of China and that face is the face of the government.

the smog should choke the chinese!!! they have polluted many nations with their pig flu, sars, and god alone knows what else!! sickening people with sickening attitudes. rude, discrimatory, self absorbed and materialistic asses!! people should just boycott the whole olympics, as their so call sports people will probably be doped to the highest extend, so they will be able to stand out against the rest of the world!!1 remember, the chinese think they created the noodles, the arithmetics, the first biggest, tallest, buildings, etc...etc....

As I said elsewhere, I've never hoped for a flop for the Olympics before, but I surely hope some colossal flop happens at these Olympics. I think it is Red China's just desserts that foreign ticket sales worldwide are sluggish. I, for one, will not be watching on TV, let alone going....

I will watch the athletes and see how the judging goes in favor of and maybe I will catch some of the mishaps and slaps in the face to the Chinese government. :)

Surely you would not want to msis that would you Blue????

As for going to China..... nope I would not dream of it and never have. And with what has happened lately in Tibet and the down and dirty dealings with Taiwan, as with the neglect of the killings in Dufur, I think many are taking the same view as the results of the slump in sales with everything involving China and the Olympics.

Naaah, better to watch the collapse from afar, and see it all in the news later. We all know how the judging will go, and that the misstpes will be blatant and obvious...
