JAL codeshares with Korean Air on Shizuoka-Incheon route

TOKYO —

Japan Airlines is to start offering codeshare flights between Shizuoka and Seoul (Incheon) operated by Korean Air (KAL) starting June 4, the first day of operation of the new Shizuoka Airport.

The new codeshare flights will internationalize JAL’s network out from Shizuoka, where the carrier will already be operating three daily return flights between Shizuoka and Fukuoka, and one daily between Shizuoka and Sapporo when the prefecture’s new airport opens its doors this June.

JAL and KAL entered their first codeshare partnership in August 2004 with the objective of mutual development on the Japan-Korea network.

Through this new agreement to include the Shizuoka-Seoul (Incheon) route, passengers traveling between the two countries, either for business or for leisure, can now expect greater convenience provided by the expanded network to 16 routes and 165 return flights a week.

Shizuoka?! Maybe the plane should stop in Osaka and Fukuoka en route and pick up enough passengers to fill the rest of the seats...

Interesting. Could be a sign that KAL isn't happen with the dominate player in Sky Team - Delta Airlines. Delta's acquisition of Northwest Airlines (the number 3 airline in Japan behind JAL and ANA) could be putting stress on the relationship.

Can't wait for the competition from Ibaraki airport! I wonder which elephant is going to be whiter.

With 11 out of the 14 regional airports in South Korea deeply in the red, they need all the flights that they can get.... one airport is operating at 3% of capacity, another takes around 26 passengers a day -served by 140 staff!
