Free Internet for Marriott Rewards members

Marriott has taken a tentative step towards following many other major hotel companies in offering guests free Internet, but stopped short of making it a global, company-wide, no terms policy.

All Marriott Rewards members, no matter what level of the program they have achieved, now receive complimentary in-room high-speed Internet access at JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels and Courtyard by Marriott hotels in Asia Pacific, including Australia, China (including Hong Kong), Guam, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

“Asia Pacific is the fastest growing region for Marriott Rewards, and we feel that complimentary high-speed Internet access will make Marriott International hotels the first choice for business travelers,” said Simon Cooper, president and managing director, Asia Pacific, Marriott International. “You can’t put a price on staying connected. So we don’t.”

Marriott Rewards Gold and Platinum elite members already receive free high-speed Internet worldwide.

Free-internet access is one of promotion features and complementary services attracting guests staying at Japan-based hotels. I have not experienced how service qualities Marriott Hotels offer to guests in Japan.

Some of the big market chains consider the internet as a premium service revenue stream rather than something included with the cost. Additionally, you are never sure of the quality of the connection so you could be paying for something that does not work. Meanwhile some of the lower market places offer free internet access to their guests.

It is a strange world where the higher priced places operate on an a la carte basis while others operate on an all-inclusive basis.

I agree. I stayed at a Marriott recently, and every service was an additional cost. The restaurant was overpriced as well, and had so-so wine and so-so food at a high price. Luxury hotels with great service and every included can demand a high price, but having a high price alone doesn't make it a luxury hotel. Marriott still has nice rooms and a nice atmosphere, so I really hope this change is the beginning of many.

The internet should be a given and not an option.

The internet has been complimentary in the many hotels we've been to.

    Welcome to 2004.

In 2005 and 2007, I stayed in a Y6,200/night business hotel in Nihonbashi that had free Internet in all rooms. They didn't ask if I was a "Rewards Member."

“You can’t put a price on staying connected. So we don’t.”. They still charge upwards of $15 per day (plus tax, plus service) in the US.

    Welcome to 2004.

No joke. I won't stay in a hotel that charges for internet. It's so customer-unfriendly.

    Charge for Internet, WTF.

My local Richmond Hotel(got a great Sizzler for foods) charges Zilch and you can rent a PC/Laptop for Y800/Day.

I really really hope that hotels don't start to go the way of airlines (US based mainly) where they charge you for every little extra thing. I can see it now... when you checking in - "would you like soap sir, that will be $1.50".

It's not free, these Marriot Rewards members paid for it by becoming Marriot Rewards members.
