Does Japan think it lives in cartoon world?

So they really think people are going to go to Hiroshima just to see a cat? Is that all the geezers running the local tourist board could come up with? I think Hiroshima has MUCH more to offer like great fishing between the bay and local islands, great art museums, and a world class symphony and opera.

"Provincial Wakayama Prefecture drew thousands of tourists to its regional train station where a cat served as nominal stationmaster."

Only as a side show. People go to Wakayama in big numbers for Wakayama Castle and Wakayama Marine World. Again, Wakayama has much more to offer than a cat.

I think that this is very cool - the only thing that would make it more interesting would be to put collar cams on a few free roaming cats to get the real cat's eye view of things. You could even offer some real time broadcasts like they do with the traffic cams.

Is it so bad to have one more attraction? Obviously, it wasn't created to replace any of the stuff Onomichi has to offer: temples and beautiful views of a city with many slopes. When you talk about about art museums, symphony and opera, you are talking much more about the Hiroshima city, not Hiroshima prefecture as a whole.

The said station (Kishi Station) in Wakayama can actually say it was saved by the cat. You are making the same mistake as above: Wakayama Castle and Wakayama Marine World are located at Wakayama city. Kishi Station is actually in Kinokawa, which is as small rural town where there's not much to see.

Quoting you, yes, Hiroshima PREFECTURE and Wakayama PREFECTURE has much more to offer, but that doesn't mean the small attractions should be looked down upon...
