I think its location did it in. It was situated at the very end of Waikiki, but separated from the other hotels by Ft. DeRussy, an Army Reserve facility and recreational hotel, which emptied out after dark. Visitors, especially women, were afraid to walk through it at night (muggings occurred), so if you were staying at the Ilikai and wanted to visit a restaurant or shop on the main drag you had to take a detour around. The Ilikiai also had condominiums for rent and I lived in one briefly.
