Will JAL survive until 2016?

I suppose they'll need the flights, seeing that the government is paying the Brazilians to go back home.

Yes, Pukey: they are in deep debt, how are they able to look so far ahead? How many people are JAL expecting to fly to the other side of the world, on JAL? Figures please - I'm a taxpayer.

TAM won't even fly the Sao Paulo-Tokyo route. As my own rule of thumb, if JAL is flying to an international destination while the local carrier doesn't, it's a good cause to believe JAL is not making money on that route.

Flying from Tokyo to Rio tires me out just thinking about it. I've aired between the two countries from the U.S. many times and each leg is at least 12 hours or more. But to fly to Brazil from Tokyo, I would need a stop over in NYC for a day or two. No thanks and skip the Olympics.

Flying out of Japan to any destination with JAL is the most expensive way currently. My web research showed me that if I want to go to Rio or Sao Paulo, any US or European carrier is at least 20,000 yen cheaper than JAL. Plus, the luggage limit is tighter with JAL.

No, just too proud. They are going to pour tons of money into JAL because it will be seen as an embarrassment if they go under.
