If you find yourself anywhere near northern Kyushu or have time for a weekend getaway, head to Fukuoka Prefecture’s Kitakyushu City to see the beautiful wisteria tunnel.
An hour drive north-east of Fukuoka City, down some winding roads and over some lush green hills, you’ll find the hidden gem of Kawauchi Wisteria Gardens.
The main attraction of the park is the 220-meter-long wisteria tunnel consisting of two variations of wisteria (which are called "fuji" in Japanese). However, the park is also full of other wisteria trees that intertwine to make a majestic roof and there are plenty of other flowers as well.
If you’re thinking, “Yeah, yeah, flowers, whatever,” take another look at the pictures and imagine yourself standing among the multicolored, beautiful blossoms, breathing in air full of their lush fragrance. Nice, right? Don’t mind the bees, they’re after the pollen, not you.
Speaking from personal experience, it may sound like a hassle to get there, but it really is worth the trouble. You’ll be completely mesmerized by the flowers, the smells, and the atmosphere. The park is open until the end of May, so, if you can, get out there and look at some beautiful flowers.
