Never go offline: Stay connected in Japan with NTT Docomo Wi-Fi

For visitors to Japan who want to stay connected, NTT Docomo is offering a Wi-Fi service that’s easy to use and highly secure. NTT Docomo is the mobile carrier with the largest number of users in Japan (approximately 65 million) and Wi-Fi hotspots available in roughly 150,000 locations throughout the country.

Docomo Wi-Fi for Visitor makes available an easily accessible public Wi-Fi network for ¥972 for one week or ¥1,404 for three weeks. The high-speed connection has a maximum data rate of 72.2 Mbps (the actual data rate will vary depending on the network environment and congestion). This allows for the smooth transfer of large files such as uploading photos to social networks or downloading apps.

The service is available throughout Japan at airports and train stations. It can also be accessed in places such as cafés, convenience stores and tourist attractions like Mount Fuji (along several trailheads).

Although there are free public Wi-Fi services and mobile router rental services available to travelers across the country, the areas where it is available are limited — even if users have registered. In fact, according to a government survey, roughly one-third of all foreign visitors to Japan listed “free public Wi-Fi availability” as one of the troubles experienced during their trip.

Additionally, mobile Wi-Fi router rental services require complicated registration and return processes, are relatively expensive and come with data usage limits. Although the coverage area may be wide, these typically use the regular mobile phone network.

Docomo Wi-Fi for Visitor is specifically designed to be easy to use for foreign globetrotters by providing a large number of hotspots at a relatively low price and the ability to obtain a user ID and password online.

When using NTT Docomo Wi-Fi, security is guaranteed between the customer’s device and NTT Docomo's hotspots with WPA2 encryption—allowing users to connect to the internet safely.

Visitors can apply quickly using a credit card or a coupon code. After signing up, just enter the ID and password you were issued into the log-in screen Docomo  Wi-Fi spot. Users who encounter any trouble or have difficulties using the service, or who have any questions, can get help from the company’s call center in Chinese, English and Korean.

Docomo don't understand security, they don't isolate connections on the same router so attackers can scan and find other people connected to the same access point.
