Bad article. Medical is the main reason, yet not mentioned. Also, lots of credit cards provide insurance, so some more details on this would have been appreciated.

@JeffLee Yes it is. Look below. I always get it when traveling as I have a Kumia health plan here which is national and the places I go would charge way over what I might get back here in Japan after I finish translating the receipts etc.

Or if your health insurance doesn’t provide coverage where you are traveling or you have a health condition that may require special care, perhaps consider it.

Anyone 65 years old and on USA Medicare needs to know that Medicare pays for NOTHING in a foreign country. Travel insurance, especially medical coverage, is absolutely necessary. However, a gall bladder removal in Japan costs $7000 USD whereas it costs $40,000 USD in California because American insurance pays for the health costs of everyone who does not have insurance. Take a chance.
