A victory for decency and sanity.

Well done to the people of Alabama.

38 ( +39 / -1 )

Excellent. No safe haven for Trump candidates now.

30 ( +31 / -1 )

Its a great result for Dems, although still depressing to think that almost half the voters voted for the child predator.

Bannon and Trump, take this L.

26 ( +27 / -1 )

Next, Trump to blame Moore for not aligning himself close enough to Trump's agenda.

Sad day for the Nashi-Bots. What will be their spin? Finally admit Moore lost because he is a sexual predator, a twice failed judge, and a Army MP in fear of being fragged because he was broadly hated by peers and subordinates alike.

20 ( +20 / -0 )

"Roy Moore will always vote with us. VOTE ROY MOORE!"

Trump and the Republicans lose a vote to grant even more power and control to the richest Americans. Not much gained with just one seat, but bit by bit hopefully there's still a chance for the Trumpbannon powers to be checked. For whatever reasons, the people of Alabama have made their choice.

17 ( +17 / -0 )

Nice to see trump take a break from golfing and committing treason to make robocalls for a child molester...

20 ( +21 / -1 )

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell had called on Moore to drop out of the race, and other Senate leaders had suggested he should eventually be expelled from the Senate if elected.

This statement is only half the story.

Eventually, the GoP (including McConnell) backed Moore and funded his campaign.

"It's simple," he said. "I don't trust Roy Moore."

It was simple, except for the Trump apologists who turned into Moore apologists.

Moore was a crazy piece of work along the lines of Trump, pure and simple. I never liked Sessions, but Moore made Sessions actually look reasonable.

18 ( +18 / -0 )

I can't believe they elected a Democrat in Alabama.

MAGA
17 ( +17 / -0 )

Now that Moore has lost, I wonder if Trump will delete his tweets supporting Moore like he did with

Strange.

No more ramming tax cuts for the rich down our throats either.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Moore now to be dropped like a hot brick by Trump, as Trump does to people who make his mirror reflection look less coiffured than yesterday.

Reminded of last week's news of "VOTE ROY MOORE!" to become this week's fake news I suppose - "Sad"

If people, especially Trump supporters, have short memories, Trump has the shortest, except for people he hates have embarrassed or have supposedly done him wrong.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

You know what a wild election this was when two of the highest profile campaigners for Jones were the always outspoken retired NBA player Charles Barkley along with Bush's top diplomat Condi Rice. Kudos Crimson Tide, great result y'all!

12 ( +12 / -0 )

@superlib I can't believe they elected a Democrat in Alabama.

I know it’s oversimplifying, but Lincoln’s views on slavery turned many in the South away from the Republican Party, and Johnson’s views on civil rights turned many there away from the Democrats.

Could Trump’s attempts to divide Americans, his garbled views on just about everything, his personal history of sexual predation, which he bragged about, plus his support for a nasty human with a history of sexual predation, among many other negative things see the south move back to supporting Democrats?

9 ( +9 / -0 )

A victory for morality and a slap to the immoral immature Trump. Good news for a change!

15 ( +15 / -0 )

It started in Virginia ... now, Alabama ... and in 2018 state after state will rain fire and fury onto the Republicans and they will lose seat after seat! The American people disapprove of Trump! They disapprove of the Trump administration! Let the people decide, indeed!

11 ( +12 / -1 )

A victory for decency and sanity.

Well done to the people of Alabama.

Yeah, I give him two years before it goes back to Republican again. Either way, Jones is a very weak Democrat in a Republican State entering the Senate because the majority of Alabamians don't agree on any progressive issue, but with a candidate like Moore you had about 22% of voters stayed at home and over 56% of Moore supporters decided they couldn't go with Moore siting the allegations surrounding him, but there is a silver lining in all of this, Jones will have to fall more in line and if he wants to get reelected in the future and doesn't follow the ultra conservative State of Alabama, he's toast. So he would have to meet Trump halfway on many of the issues that are in the hearts of the people of that State.

-30 ( +2 / -32 )

Roy Moore: "If you don't believe in my character, don't vote for me."

Seems the people of Alabama showed that character matters too

Alabama is a red state - there's no question about that. But just because Alabamans side with one's political doctrine, that does not mean they would set aside and forget one's character transgressions

So they just showed that character matters too, not just political ideas

Roll tide

14 ( +15 / -1 )

@bass because the majority of Alabamians don't agree on any progressive issue,

Do you have source for this, or do you know it from living there?

Fox 'news' said Moore lost because of the 'media' (curious that Murdoch, the owner of a global media empire, blasts media, isn't it) and the 'establishment'. But then Murdoch knows his followers think in 7 or fewer words slogans.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Pro-Choice, pro-gay Democrat wins in Alabama.

Suck on that, Republicans. Suck on that.

19 ( +20 / -1 )

Well done, people of Alabama!

But let's be honest about one thing:

In a tweet, Trump congratulated Jones, a former U.S. attorney. "The Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!" Trump tweeted.

The tweet was spelled correctly and correctly used commas to demark clause boundaries. We can be fairly certain it was his lawyer who wrote it, not Trump. Odds are good what Trump was actually doing when that tweet went out was throwing covfefe at his toveevee.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

If Trump is even less popular in two years time, I sure as heck wouldn't put my money on his preferred candidates.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

An endorsement from Trump in Alabama is like a kiss of death. 0-2 in a state he won in a landslide just a year ago.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Half agree with Christian crimes, why can’t the other half learn about the joy of forgiveness.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

That Alabama seat would had been won by any Republican candidate with better character

They should had chosen such a Republican - don't just choose someone because ya agree with their views - don't just turn a blind eye on their character transgressions too

Someone with Roy Moore's views could win that Alabama seat in the future, but it won't be Roy Moore

Choose better

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Yes! Made my day.

A big win for Alabama, for the country, and most of all for justice.

A big loss for lying pedophiles like Moore, and for those who thought such behavior didn't matter. Bannon can now go do to himself what Moore attempted to do to underage girls.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

lots of interesting tidbits from this election. first, only half of the people who voted for more approve of trump, which means trump's popularity in a deep red state is waning. second, the write-in vote (1.7% of the vote) cost moore the election, proving that enough republicans choose country over party. finally, moore STILL won almost 60% of the educated (4-year college degree) white voters, which proves the maxim that unless a politician is found with a dead girl or young boy, people will still vote for him/her.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Voting with us - is good.

Being a puppet - is bad.

What’s the difference?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Everybody knows what would have occurred if Roy Moore had won - the same thing that's happening with other Congressmen who are facing sexual allegations:

Moore's case would've been put immediately in front of the Ethics Committee, the moment he sets foot on the Senate floor - those allegations would have to be formally investigated and can't be set aside

0 ( +2 / -2 )

An endorsement from Trump in Alabama is like a kiss of death

In his attempts to divide Americans, is Trump actually causing larger numbers to unite, to come together against him, Bannon and their ilk? People might not be united against the Republican Party as a whole, but united against the Party's extremist fringes, those within the Party who want to grant the executive excessive powers and allow foreign governments to 'meddle' in US elections and politics, plus other actions that benefit the tiniest fraction of Americans.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Wow, amazing. I was sure Moore would win, being Alabama.

The right has been going on all along about how the democrats keep losing seats. They just one a seat in Alabama, first time in 25 years. I think we're going to see a cascade of these over the next couple of years. Trump is just too much a mess, and with the Republicans supporting him, they are going to alienate more and more of their members who are closer to center than the extreme-right that the party is beginning to lean towards.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

Trump is just too much a mess, and with the Republicans supporting him, they are going to alienate more and more of their members who are closer to center than the extreme-right that the party is beginning to lean towards.

Just wait for the backlash when the extreme-right try to go after entitlements (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) after giving the rich a huge tax break. It has already been hinted at by Ryan and several senators as the next step after so-called "tax reform".

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Common sense prevailed after all. Who'd have thought the tide would turn so quickly and in Alabama of all places?

The modern face of the GOP is now Trump and associated alleged accused and unrepentant molesters.

I don't suppose we're going to see our Russian contributors today.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Fantastic news; it shows that the people of Alabama do not want a paedophile to represent them. I wonder how much credit Trump will take for backing Moore in their paedo-groper alliance?

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Do you have source for this, or do you know it from living there?

Alabama is THE most conservative state in the union, there is no way that a Democrat can ever hold that seat for a long time if he thinks he can change progressive, it will never happen. The only reason why he won was because Moore was so toxic, that is the only reason.

Fox 'news' said Moore lost because of the 'media' (curious that Murdoch, the owner of a global media empire, blasts media, isn't it) and the 'establishment'. But then Murdoch knows his followers think in 7 or fewer words slogans.

This has nothing to do with Fox, Moreland. Been. This has everything to do with the allegations that were hurled at Moore nothing more.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Everybody knows what would have occurred if Roy Moore had won - the same thing that's happening with other Congressmen who are facing sexual allegations:

Moore's case would've been put immediately in front of the Ethics Committee, the moment he sets foot on the Senate floor - those allegations would have to be formally investigated and can't be set aside.

I Agree, it would’ve been a huge political mess and he could have Seriously damaged the Republicans for a very long time, and they probably would have lost a lot of seats from the fall out of that, so it is kind of a blessing in the sky that they dodged a bullet on that one.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

People of Alabama have spoken screw you Trump.

Not really, Jones is the vulnerable candidate in the most heavily State, so he does need to be very careful 22% of people stayed home, enthusiasm wasn’t that high.

-15 ( +1 / -16 )

there is no way that a Democrat can ever hold that seat for a long time

At least 6 years. The world is changing fast and so is Alabama, despite the grievance politics of Trumpbannon.

Go Jones!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

they probably would have lost a lot of seats from the fall out of that, so it is kind of a blessing in the sky that they dodged a bullet on that one.

That didn't occur to you until today?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Someone with Roy Moore's views could win that Alabama seat in the future, but it won't be Roy Moore

That is the sad thing, the only reason why Democrats won was because of the child rape claims. If those rape claims had never come up in Alabama then the Republicans would have won.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

@bass This has everything to do with the allegations that were hurled at Moore nothing more.

The allegations against Moore reported by a full range of media outlets unafraid to upset Trumpbannon etal should reinforce the need for maintaining a free press, even though Trumpbannon etal want to undermine media with perspectives different from theirs.

Given a free, for profit press, it's fine that infowars, Russia Today, the Murdoch outlets worldwide, plus the tweeter-in-chief (along with some of his highly paid private lawyers) pushed their perspectives; in this case to no avail.

@bass The only reason why he won was because Moore was so toxic,

Sad that so many saw Moore as 'toxic', yet still supported him.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

as Bass points out, if Jones doesn’t carry out the wishes of his heavily Republican state and vote along those lines, he will be out in a year from now.

In all likelihood, he will be replaced by a Republican in a year, anyway.

Small potatoes.

-14 ( +1 / -15 )

At least 6 years.

If he keeps the values and traditions of that conservative State, sure.

The world is changing fast and so is Alabama, despite the grievance politics of Trumpbannon.

Yeah, but not changing in the way progressives would like, that’s like California turning into a religious state, it will never happen.

The allegations against Moore reported by a full range of media outlets unafraid to upset Trumpbannon etal should reinforce the need for maintaining a free press, even though Trumpbannon etal want to undermine media with perspectives different from theirs.

What?

Given a free, for profit press, it's fine that infowars, Russia Today, the Murdoch outlets worldwide, plus the tweeter-in-chief (along with some of his highly paid private lawyers) pushed their perspectives; in this case to no avail.

Uuhh....ok...lol

-14 ( +1 / -15 )

bass4funk: "eah, I give him two years before it goes back to Republican again."

Sooooo amusing to watch you and the other Trump supporters scream sour grapes Strangerland take note of usage of the expression!) and "small potatoes" when it's clear the verdict on Trump and his policies is in. You said, "When it's a blue state flipped I'll be interested" after the GOP lost Virginia and GOP mayoral candidates fell like flies, and here you are, a state that has not elected a Democratic candidate in 35 years, who clearly do not support the likes of Moore and Trump. Now, yesterday you believed whatever Moore said, and he also said that this election is a referendum on Trump himself, so there you go. You cannot deny the effect Trump has had on this election.

"I Agree, it would’ve been a huge political mess and he could have Seriously damaged the Republicans for a very long time"

Show me where you were saying this yesterday, bud. I bet even Trump will be trying to distance himself from Moore today, saying that he never endorsed him, did not support him, etc., etc. Does not bode well at all for the GOP, who are running scared. McConnel and the other cowards who flipped on their support of the man when it looked like he would win have a lot of answering to do to now that "Alabama has voted on the issue (of sexual assault)"; they switched from "believing the women" to supporting Moore pretty quick. Now it'll back to "believing the women" again.

Thank god Alabamans have showed they are for progress and against pedophilia and sexual assault. Next is Trump, who supported Moore.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Gotta laugh at how desperate the Trump haters are.

One senate seat has been flipped. It will be flipped back after the mid-terms. House and Senate and Supreme Court are all Republican.

And oh yeah. President Trump is the Predident.

Even the HuffPost yesterday lamented that he just keeps winning!

-19 ( +1 / -20 )

clamenza: "Gotta laugh at how desperate the Trump haters are."

You're laughing at not only the entire world outside the US, but the majority of Americans, friend, and you know what they say when you are the only one laughing in the room, right?

"Even the HuffPost yesterday lamented that he just keeps winning!"

Yep, he sure "won" this one. Remember, he personally endorsed Moore, and Moore and the GOP have said it is a referendum on Trump when they thought Moore would win. Haha.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Even the HuffPost yesterday lamented that he just keeps winning!

You have a pretty odd definition of "winning".

Well done to the people of Alabama! So much for "God being on Roy Moore's side". Turns out God hates the dirty old man and all the creeps who supported him. It was hilarious watching filthy old Moore bizarrely attempting to ride a horse to the polling booth - and then slurring lines from the Bible in mangled english after his loss!

13 ( +14 / -1 )

That is the sad thing, the only reason why Democrats won was because of the child rape claims.

Try to downplay the loss and blame the fact that a failure of a candidate was on the ticket, but most voters didn't like Moore to begin with.

This vote was partially a referendum on Bannon and Trump because Moore was a mirror of their platform.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Sweet Home Alabama indeed

Muscle Shoals and the Swampers!

4 ( +4 / -0 )

 blessing in the sky

Interesting phonetic transliteration of the English phrase "blessing in disguise". From what language did it come originally, we wonder!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

smithinjapan - Trump wasn't elected to get Roy Moore elected, he was elected on other, bigger promises that he's checking off every week.

Hence the HuffPost lamentations.

You must have seen that.

-16 ( +0 / -16 )

Gotta laugh at how desperate the Trump haters are.

What is to love about Trump? How has he made life better for Americans. Also, Alabama is probably the lowest state in the US in terms of poverty and intelligence (on average). Why would they want to vote for someone who just campaigns for believing in the flying Jesus zombie and guns. There are more important things like improving the rock bottom Alabama- schools, hospitals, infrastructure which are all rock bottom on a national and global level. How can that be done be believing in the flying Jesus zombie? That's what Moore is.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Curious that in Roy Moore's rambling non-resignation speech he thanked Nigel Farage and Steve Bannon for coming to the non-celebration. Moore's defeat is another blow to the attempts by Trump, Bannon and Farage to further fragment their respective societies.

Saner heads prevailed. Knock wood a unified movement will slow down the divisive, rightist movements in the US and around the world.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Interesting phonetic transliteration of the English phrase "blessing in disguise". From what language did it come originally, we wonder!

Hey, who are you to question our road's scholar?! Just kidding, I could care less. ;)

10 ( +10 / -0 )

do you have the stones to talk so dismissively about another religious idol like

Did Jesus die, come back to life, then float up to the "heavens"? Yes? Then he is a flying zombie. It's a fairy tale and people who literally believe it are not the brightest. On top of that people who vote for another person just because they say "I believe in Jesus more than my opponent" and are serious about it end up living in a dump like Alabama. Moore would keep Alabama in a dump just for the sake of a dead man who can fly.

Muhammad?

Not corrupting the US like the evangelicals. If they start electing the Muslim version of Moore then I will go there. Next? Scientology? Devil Worshipers?

Jesus is a flying zombie.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

This election result was God telling Moore he doesn’t like pedophiles.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Of course not. Yet another hypocrite who won't answer for his own bigotry while at the same time a virtue-signaler.

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

Hey, who are you to question our road's scholar?! Just kidding, I could care less. ;)

Perfectly captured! Bravo

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Roy Moore has exposed himself enough.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Sooooo amusing to watch you and the other Trump supporters scream sour grapes Strangerland take note of usage of the expression!) and "small potatoes" when it's clear the verdict on Trump and his policies is in.

No, it wasn’t, Trump is still mostly very popular with that State and won’t 72% of Evangelicals. I’ve been to Alabama 4 times and it’s as conservative as it gets, there is no way that State will change blue at least not in the forseeable future, maybe once all of us are long dead and gone there might be a chance.

Virginia? It is a blue State, it doesn’t count, no Republican was going to win in that State, everyone knew that. So it’s not a win. Today was a win, but only because of the garbage the Republican was carrying with him. I don’t know if the allegations are true or not, but with the unfair coverage that was going on, he just didn’t have a chance. But it’s not a referendum on Trump, not even close. Go to Alabama and spend a week there. Religious, hate abortion, are definitely for sealed borders, are against gay marriage, all the things Jones agrees with that the majority of Alabamians don’t.

I never supported Moore, i don’t live in Alabama, so it wasn’t up to me, i probably wouldn’t have voted for Moore, but I wouldn’t have voted for Jones either. I would have probably just do a write-in. But again, Jones is a very vulnerable Democrat in an ocean of Red, if he wants to get re-elected, he follows the Trump agenda, if he doesn’t, you will have a Republican again within 2 years. Arnold tried to turn California red and look how that turned out.

Thank god Alabamans have showed they are for progress and against pedophilia and sexual assault. Next is Trump, who supported Moore.

Well, that’s all good and fine, that has nothing to do with the conservative State. As for Trump, what next? He supported Moore sure, so he was supposed to support Jones? Are you serious? Yes, I can see him supporting a man who supports unfettered abortion and wants open borders, but now, Jones better be veeeeery careful about that. But the GOP did save themselves with this win even if it’s an upset, had Moore won, they would have been finished, at least they can walk away from this one, surprisingly unscathed.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

Good to see another birther wasn’t allowed to into a position of power.

A civilised country can do without the kind of sick and unsophisticated mind capable of believing rancid, idiotic trash like birtherism.

After Trump’s lavatorial tweet earlier on today which stunk the place out, this is fresh breeze of civilised behaviour. The Trump supporters will just have to put a spacesuit on and break wind to feel at home.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

A civilised country can do without the kind of sick and unsophisticated mind capable of believing rancid, idiotic trash like birtherism.

That whole birtherism thing really got to you didn’t it. I really don’t know a day where you haven’t mentioned it.

After Trump’s lavatorial tweet earlier on today which stunk the place out, this is fresh breeze of civilised behaviour.

I don’t know if supporting late term abortion is civilized, I would find it abhorrent.

The Trump supporters will just have to put a spacesuit on and break wind to feel at home.

Is that foreign Humor? Hmmmm....

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

His election will not effect the pending votes in Congress on a tax overhaul or government funding.

Not the latter certainly, but the former - that's probable, for two reasons.

First, the GOP's three-defection margin will be cut to two as soon as Jones is seated, and this puts heavy time pressure to get a bill to vote at a time when the GOP can't even agree on corporate or individual top-bracket rates - and that's not to mention the myriad carve-outs. So the "It'd be nice to get this done before Christmas" pace is now "We've gotta get this done before Christmas!"

Second, assuming Corker remains a 'no' (a solid assumption), the GOP can only afford to lose two more senators. Several, such as Collins and McCain, have been wavering, but the Trump/GOP "This must be done!" juggernaut has so far pulled them along. But the GOP is losing now, and why betray your values (McCain) and threaten your future (Collins) for a lost cause?

Work will resume on the tax bill in a few hours under a dramatically altered atmosphere. The existential imperative to get it done still exists - imagine the full first year of Trump's presidency with zero legislative accomplishments and zero teed up! - the question is whether the will has been broken.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Well ok, so Moore lost. Didnt expect that, but at least the voters got to vote and will have to live with that as the person they elected spends the next 2 years voting against every single thing they want.

At least now I dont have to hear about yearbooks and shopping mails anymore. All of the accusers will just disappear and Gloria Allred will move on to her next payday. Unfortunately Dems will now think making sexual assault allegations is how to 'win' so they will be doing this every election from now until it doesnt work anymore.

So now that Moore isnt going to be a Senator, the news cycle is wide open and the media will have to find something else to cover. There is a lot going on right now, so I think some people wont be too happy now that there isnt Roy Moore to take them off the front page (Fusion GPS people. that FBI agent and his mistress texting, the DOJ leadership guy and his wife).

But Im sure the media will find something new to distract us by tomorrow.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

@blacklab  voting against every single thing they want.

Hyperbole much? Telling truth works better, at least for people able to think critically.

But Im sure the media will find something new to distract us by tomorrow.

And I'm sure they'll report a wide range of topics representing a wide range of perspectives. Isn't a free, for profit press great!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I guess this really showed that even in the deep heart of conservative conservatism, psycho-religious, predatory right wing-nuts are not a shoo-in.

As to be expected the Moore apologists are trying to milk every ounce of "positivity" out of this, blaiming the write ins, blaiming the media, etc and wrapping it all up with "W'll git ya nex time".

A bright day for America.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

at least the voters got to vote and will have to live with that as the person they elected spends the next 2 years voting against every single thing they want.

Yes, I am sure the Alabama voters need a tax cut for the wealthy and a cut on access to medical care.

Alabama has the highest infant mortality rate of all the states.

What has the GoP done to help them? Not much.

Will the GoP help them now that they are in power? Not when they are focused on hurting the majority of Alabama voters.

There is a large chance that Alabama will come to realize they were shooting themselves in the foot by following the GoP, which is only in it for the rich.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

And I'm sure they'll report a wide range of topics representing a wide range of perspectives. Isn't a free, for profit press great!

Let’s see how many of them will have to retract their stories this time, I know their itchin’

As to be expected the Moore apologists are trying to milk every ounce of "positivity" out of this, blaiming the write ins, blaiming the media, etc and wrapping it all up with "W'll git ya nex time".

Not trying, it is a positive result for in the sense, as problematic as Jones might be, but imagine if Moore would have won, the GOP would have filed to get him unseated before he even steps foot in the Senate which would have been hard to do, the fighting would have been fierce, the people of Alabama would be even more outraged, the GOP would have felt some possible repercussions at the polls for accepting an alleged sexual predator, the overall optics of it would have been bad, even though I get why they wanted Moore to have a more closer majority, but in the end, it might be better and it still may work out in Trump’s favor.

A bright day for America.

Not for America as a whole, but for the GOP, had Moore won, the Dems would have been in a very good position, but Jones saved them (inadvertently)

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

@bass I know their itchin’

What???

but in the end, it might be better and it still may work out in Trump’s favor.

LOL

2 ( +2 / -0 )

bass4funk: "The only reason why he won was because Moore was so toxic, that is the only reason."

Again, you said NOTHING about him being toxic until he lost. It's sour grapes. Plain and simple.

"Virginia? It is a blue State, it doesn’t count, no Republican was going to win in that State, everyone knew that. So it’s not a win."

Yes, that's what I said. When you were laughing about how the Republicans "keep winning" (which, oddly, clamenza is claiming here), I said, "Like in Virginia?" and you said much like you just said, here; that it's a blue state and "doesn't count", adding, "I'll be interested when they flip a red state." So, my question was, are you interested now? Because, it sounds to me and others like you guys are just busy making excuses and claiming it's not a red state now. :)

"Today was a win, but only because of the garbage the Republican was carrying with him."

Sorry, but again, NOT what you were saying even yesterday.

clamenza: "smithinjapan - Trump wasn't elected to get Roy Moore elected, he was elected on other, bigger promises that he's checking off every week."

Doesn't matter when the point is that even THIS MORNING you guys were saying it is a referendum on Trump. Watch the very embarrassing interview of Moore's spokesperson this morning saying, "Moore's going to win it; Republicans know it. America knows it. The world knows it. Because he's moral," etc. etc. I want to ask him what he thinks now. As such, this is a devastating loss for Trump in particular, and the GOP in general. They supported him, and said it was a statement on Trump that Moore was going to win. Oops! What's more, you guys spent SO much time and effort saying that this election would prove one way or the other Moore's guilt or innocence in the sexual assaults, so now you have your verdict. The people aren't letting is slide, which spells even MORE trouble for Trump in the very same sexual assault quagmire. Six women now demanding a congressional hearing, and counting! :)

Oh! And with Doug winning that's one less vote for the tax bill, amigo! So looks like it may not pass after all. :)

"Hence the HuffPost lamentations. You must have seen that."

I don't read the HuffPost, which I said yesterday (started my comment with "Nope", but.... surprise surprise, you completely missed it, as you do the point on many things), but I doubt very much it is as you say. I mean, after all, you did say about this loss that "Trump keeps winning".

bass4funk: "Not for America as a whole, but for the GOP, had Moore won, the Dems would have been in a very good position, but Jones saved them (inadvertently)"

Yep... keep spinning, amigo! This loss is the beginning of the end for Trump and the GOP.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The same people who were claiming with breathless certainty 24 hours ago that there was no chance Moore could lose are now claiming with the same certainty to know that 2 years from now Jones can't possibly win again.

Why it's almost like these predictions aren't made based on a rational analysis of facts, but rather by a blind fanatical devotion to a political tribe mixed with the absolute certainty that JapanToday won't preserve our posting records for long enough for anyone to check if the prediction was wrong.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

That whole birtherism thing really got to you didn’t it. I really don’t know a day where you haven’t mentioned it.

I think it’s a very useful example of how far standards have slipped. Apart from the underage girls accusations, this reeking conspiracy theory alone should render a candidate toxic.

Trump is another example. His years on the birther crusade show a sick and simple mind unfit for government. The fact that birtherism has been subsequently buried under a mound of more stinking trash doesn’t mean it should be forgotten.

Perhaps it was the birtherism issue which led you to label the Trump campaign a lunatic fringe from an early stage. I understand that.

Anyway, Moore showed up to vote riding a friggin' horse. Sure, that's environmentally friendly (irony!), but what kind of yahoo rides a horse to the polls?

An addition to the wrench suddenly tossed into the GOP's tax "reform" plan is a whole lotta worse blood between McConnell - who counseled arms-length from Moore - and Trump, who is no doubt cursing McConnell even as I write this as being responsible for Moore's defeat. Trump throwing in his last-minute support behind Moore's doomed candidacy makes Trump look like a weak fool, and neither characterization pleases Trump at all.

Toxic.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Oh, and let's not forget that the only reason the election was held was as Trump chose then-Alabama senator Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General, figuring his replacement would be a shoe-in. Trump now deeply detests Sessions and has also lost the seat.

Uh - whoops?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Poor Moore. He's lost to Jones by about the same percentage that Trump lost to Clinton - but Trump's president! No wonder he thinks it's unfair.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

It won’t If he stays on the rails.

You just lost the elections and you still think you call the shots? Hahahaha Hilarious, Mr. Roads scholar.

Alabamans voted overwhemingly for Jones. They knew who he is and what he supports. That's why he won

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Well on the good side Franken has to follow through with his resignation now.

Other than that and Moore not being around for the Dems/libs to constantly complain about, this whole election thing was pretty much a time wasting disaster. Allows Flake and McCain to block everything Repubs want to do with just the two of them, which is really bad.

Oh well, the voters have spoken so just gotta move on.

Anyway, Moore showed up to vote riding a friggin' horse. Sure, that's environmentally friendly (irony!), but what kind of yahoo rides a horse to the polls?

Or who's wardrobe was hand-me-downs from one of the village people.

Lynrd Skynrd need to bring out a new version of Sweet Home Alabama if any of them are still alive....

In Birmingham they loved the molester, boo hooooo hoo....

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Lol - this is so entertaining. I see them making excuses but all I can hear is -

Wah wah wah wah wah

Fantastic!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Allows Flake and McCain to block everything Repubs want to do with just the two of them, which is really bad.

Nah. It's worse. In addition to Corker and Collins - and perhaps Murkowski - there's also Wisconsin's Ron Johnson, Montana's Steve Daines, and even Marco Rubio. If 3 of these 8 flip (or 2, after Jones is seated), it's game over for tax reform.

And that would leave Trump with a big legislative nada for his first year. Still not likely, most say, but I think it's growing more probable. Why put your eggs in Trump's basket at this point? - even in Alabama, a state he won yugely, exit polls showed his support evenly split with opposition.

The fever has broken. One year in, and Trump's a lame duck.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I don't think anyone should be surprised by this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So he would have to meet Trump halfway on many of the issues that are in the hearts of the people of that State. why? Trump endorsed Moore, Moore ran his campaign supporting Trumps policies , if Republican Alabamians decided to stay home and not vote then what does that say about their support for Trump. A red state that has been held for 20yrs and won easily last election. Seems Trump doesnt have the support of the people he seems to think he does.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

It's simply an election, which is inconsequential apart from legislation. Just came back from walking my dog and was thinking about the psychological factors. Assuming Corker's out on tax "reform" and that one other senator defects, that would be a tie requiring Pence's vote. The worst legislation, the most unpopular in a generation, one which would radically alter the financial landscape of America and which has busted through every single legislative guardrail designed precisely to prevent exactly this - well, if it's 50-50, every single GOP senator who votes for it owns it in its entirety. During the next election, they will be reminded of it.

So my guess is that if there is a single further defection beyond Corker, there will be more. The conventional wisdom is that tax "reform"will pass simply because it must pass, but if I were a betting man, I'd short it.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Again, you said NOTHING about him being toxic until he lost. It's sour grapes. Plain and simple.

before election: man is innocent until proven guilty, fake news, these women are liars etc etc,

after election: the man was toxic, I wouldn't have voted for him anyways, good riddance.

damn people jump ship quicker than you can say "child molester", LOL

6 ( +6 / -0 )

so as it stands now, Trump failed on Obamacare, failed on the wall, has only a one seat majority in congress with many in his own party despising him, FBI investigating him over Russia, women accusing him of sexual harassment. Damn theres a lot of winning going on with team Trump. LOL

9 ( +9 / -0 )

know it’s oversimplifying, but Lincoln’s views on slavery turned many in the South away from the Republican

Lincoln’s views on slavery were that he would never allow any freed slaves to live in his home state of Illinois, all blacks should be returned to Africa and he couldn’t not have cared less about slavery.

The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in The Confederate states, which were no longer part of the United States, so it had no legal authority at all. It was another provocation during the war. it would be like Trump declaring a tax cut in Bolivia.

Per Josh Holmes, former chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell:

A complete break from Bannonism in GOP primaries can reunite the party behind the Trump agenda and salvage the midterms.

Ha ha! Agenda?! What - the wall?! Even trying to shove legislation through the senate under arcane rules to avoid the filibuster - and remember, all you need here is simply your team together - has thus far resulted in nothing. Try legislating when at least eight Dem senators are required. And Bannonism is a threat but only because the GOP has allowed it to become so.

Watching chickens come home to roost is so satisfactory.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Allows Flake and McCain to block everything Repubs want to do with just the two of them, which is really bad. Oh well, the voters have spoken so just gotta move on. yeah well you know the Dems did have the popular vote of the American people, so Flake and McCain are just evening everything out in the end. Thats the thing with democracy, just when you think its failing you one day, it can be your best friend the next.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I don't know whether he deserved to be calling names as "Pedophile" or not. It looks like Witch hunt to me and their intention was to destroy Roy Moor and Republican.

Why these women are coming forward and accused him they have a sexual relationship when they were in under age only after he declared to enter election for Senate?

I'm sure they are Democrat supporters. They have enjoyed together in the past. Now they are accusing him for sexual misconduct.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

Why these women are coming forward and accused him they have a sexual relationship when they were in under age only after he declared to enter election for Senate?

I'm sure they are Democrat supporters.

At least one is a Trump supporter:

https://qz.com/1128438/roy-moore-accusers-beverly-nelson-a-trump-supporter-says-he-assaulted-her-at-16/

And sometimes people don't care to divulge character transgressions unless one is going to affect bigger things or a lot more people. (For ex: coworkers may not like someone but don't mind much just having him/her as a fellow coworker, but once he/she starts being considered for the boss position, then that's when they let the management know how he/she won't make for a good boss)

When what one is going to be doing becomes more consequential and affecting bigger things and more people, that's when people become more concerned

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I'm sure they are Democrat supporters.

You should fact check yourself before posting so you don't look stupid for posting something that is already well known to be wrong.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

But lo and behold, Jones won. Did all of those inbred morons suddenly get smart? Or was their election of Jones just another example of the innate stupidity that was so popularly attributed to them, by so many, during the campaign?

You may want to research the exit polls before spouting nonsense.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

You may want to research the exit polls before spouting nonsense.

What are the exit polls going to show that relates to my question? Before the election the popular narrative, by many on the left, was that Alabamians were a bunch of red neck idiots, so ignorant that they would vote Moore no matter what. All the exit polls show is that the original narrative was wrong and not all Alabamians fit into the neat little box that the left assigned them to.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

All the exit polls show is that the original narrative was wrong and not all Alabamians fit into the neat little box that the left assigned them to

kuya808- brilliant

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

All the exit polls show is that the original narrative was wrong and not all Alabamians fit into the neat little box that the left assigned them to.

The original narrative, if you will, was correct for rural areas where Moore won by huge margins.

He also won among people identifying as white and deeply religious, and he won the age group over 65. He lost nearly all the other age groups with one group too close to call.

So yes, the narrative applies to rural areas where uneducated white people live and for people identifying as white and religious. They voted 80-90% in support of Moore.

The fact that he only won the over 65 year old demographic should scare Republicans to death, but they are too slow on the uptake and will not change their losing agenda. They would rather push through unpopular laws that will further kill them in future elections.

So, to say that Jones will lose in two years is a stretch.

Go Bannon, you are killing the GoP and have nothing to replace it with.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

All the exit polls show is that the original narrative was wrong and not all Alabamians fit into the neat little box that the left assigned them to. or many are starting to realise that team Trump is just not what they expected, the winning they thought would eventuate hasn't and their President is just a recalcitrant man-child.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Yep... keep spinning, amigo! This loss is the beginning of the end for Trump and the GOP

Yeah, you guys keep saying that and then you crash and burn every single time.

Oh, please! Take a trip down to any city in Bama and there is nothing that’s progressive about it, adhering to it or even taking root. It’s all about how the people felt voting for and alleged sexual predator over the open borders, abortion supporting Jones. They chose Jones, but this will more likely be good for Trump, the GOP and Alabama. Jones is representing the 2nd most religious State in the union. He’s a vulnerable Democrat in a Red State and I’m sure he wants to get re-elected, so he has to walk the fine line and not upset the people of that State.

Not if he starts stomping on Conservative policies or the strongest policies that are dear to the hearts of Alabamians.

Just like how electing Trump was all about getting a racist into office, right?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Glad Jones won. Now find Republicans need to find a decent candidate and kick him to the curb in two years. Displacing a man who chased teenagers with a man that believes in infanticide isn't much of choice. Alabama can do better.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Things are getting interesting! Kentucky just tragically lost a Republican yesterday for similar reasons as Moore. It is an unfortunate situation for his family.

Liberals once again celebrating a spring training game after losing the World Series,, actually id say its more a victory to get into the finals, with only a 1 seat majority in the senate , Trumps going to have to suck up extra hard to those Republicans that despise him, so far 1st innings, 0-1 Obamacare, 2nd, 0-2 Trump wall fail, 3rd 0-3 seat lost in Senate, into the 4th youve got FBI probe and sexual harassment claims. Trumps back to back world series is look increasing grim.

From the looks of it, the GOP will probably retain the House.

Trumps going to have to suck up extra hard to those Republicans that despise him, so far 1st innings, 0-1 Obamacare, 2nd, 0-2 Trump wall fail, 3rd 0-3 seat lost in Senate, into the 4th youve got FBI probe and sexual harassment claims. Trumps back to back world series is look increasing grim

Basically, Trump is in good standing, now that the economy is becoming an unstoppable juggernaut the longer it goes, the more difficult it will be to dislodge the President. Don’t know much about Baseball, but in chess, it seems it’ll be a checkmate, good on the President.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Good luck to Senator Jones, especially if he wants to keep his seat in the 2020 election!

As for Moore, what I am curious about it this: now that the election is over and his campaign failed, what will happen to his accusers? Will they fade away now that they aren't needed, or will he actually have to confront them in court? If the former, it is a despicable strategy by the Democrats. If the latter, we can at least hope for some form of justice. The accusers deserve their chance to prove their stories.

Most conservatives are hoping that the Democrats make more of this victory instead of seeing it as an outlier. GOP voters stayed home in record numbers rather than making an unpalatable choice. It would be foolish to expect the same thing to happen again.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Moore was a grotesquely unsuitable candidate, worse even than Trump himself, which is really saying something. So it would be wrong to read too much into the result, but still it shows what voters in so-called red states really think about the Trump/Bannon agenda. Administration should be very afraid.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Basically, Trump is in good standing, now that the economy is becoming an unstoppable juggernaut the longer it goes, everybody was stating the same thing in 2006+2007 leading up to the GFC, when the economy stopped dead in its tracks. the economy wont be good forever , there is always a downturn. Probably when people realize they have to pay for Trumps 1.5trillion in tax cuts, which is expect to add another $Trillion to the deficit, the same deficit Trump promised he would fix. I can smell another debt ceiling raise very soon.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/11/28/us/politics/tax-bill-deficits.html

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Look people I know that pretty much all you want to jump for joy for winning the seat, but Moore was a horrible candidate. Jones at best will the equivalent of Olympia Snow in Senate, if he honestly wants to try and keep the seat. Most likely though the democrats will use him for the remainder of the term torpedoing as much they can with his vote. Next election the seat reverts. The GOP will still most likely lose some seats next election possibly the Senate, but please don't equate this win with some Progressive shift in the South. You look like fools.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

a man that believes in infanticide

Pretty awful smear. #gutterpolitics

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Gcbel,

Expect nothing less from the radical Independent Republicans.

Choosing to support a candidate accused of paedophilia over a Democrat is the level of fanaticism found today from the fringe American right. Other than ISIS, I don't think the modern world has ever seen such nutjobs.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Not if he starts stomping on Conservative policies or the strongest policies that are dear to the hearts of Alabamians. doesnt need to theres enough Republican senators that do that just fine, Jones just makes it that little bit harder for Trump. Obamacare her to stay, mostly , that wall that Mexico is going to pay for seems like a dream now.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Jones is the vulnerable candidate in the most heavily State, so he does need to be very careful 22% of people stayed home, enthusiasm wasn’t that high.

Enthusiasm for accused pedophiles wasn't that high, anyway.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

amusing, a blow to trump would have been this clown winning by a land slide based on policy or opposition to trump. the reality is the Democrat party Politburo spent a few hundred million on a propaganda campaign which succeeded in at best being a blow to the scum political class

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Bama and there is nothing that’s progressive about it,

It's a dump.

a man who chased teenagers

It seems a lot of flying Jesus zombie believers are like that.

wants open borders

I checked and the borders are still open. No wall.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

amusing, a blow to trump would have been this clown winning by a land slide based on policy or opposition to trump. well Republicans have held Alabama for 25yrs, last election they got 64% of the vote. so it may not be a landslide but its close to it. yes it is a blow to Trump as now he has to suck up extra hard (which he hates) to those Republicans that despise him. Cant get policies passed without the senate.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Try to downplay the loss and blame the fact that a failure of a candidate was on the ticket, but most voters didn't like Moore to begin with.

This vote was partially a referendum on Bannon and Trump because Moore was a mirror of their platform.

Viking68 - I agree with you, I didn't like Moore and am happy he didn't win, with that being said it was obvious that up until the child rape accusations came out that Moore was going to win the election. It is such a poor reflection on Alabama voters that the only reason why Moore lost was because of the allegations. I mean you needed those allegations to not vote for the guy? The guy's views were just wrong on everything else and yet you were still going to vote for the guy? Come on Alabama!
