Did the officer who shot himself die?

elbudamexicano, it says just above the line about shooting himself that the guy committed suicide, so I would imagine that the officer did die.

Like all societies, the ugly face of racism is alive and well in Australia. However, up until recent times it has been rather well hidden and very much adverse to the glare of publicity. Recently, however, among other issues Australia has had a nice little spat with India regarding the penchant of some uncouth individuals to engage in "Paki-Bashing" (excuse the term) as a form of entertainment. This is a very worrying development.
Now with regard to these police down in the State of Victoria (a state police force rather than the feds), as with all other people in uniform (whether military or otherwise), it is expected that their conduct regarding such matters be beyond reproach. To put this in layman's terms, I have no sympathy at all for any police who might loose their jobs as a result of this sordid affair. Indeed, the State Government should move to ensure that any and all such officers are prosecuted to the full extent of the law, them also losing any and all entitlements (including retirement benefits, etc) if found guilty of these accusations.

I have never been to Oz but wud like to visit some day but the vibe I have been getting for a few years now is that many caucasians in Oz arent happy with many new immigrants so this is hardly surprizing

LOL! An ad that says "Australia is closer than it seems. Click here to live and work in Australia" popped up right underneath these comments. Hmm, let's all think about that one ...

Nice of the press to help someone in the police ranks pass the buck. It was not the scandal that cost the life of the officer, it was telling him is job was on the line over a picture and some racist statements. The policeman who said that to the two officers is the one who sparked a suicide and its on his head.
The only way I can see getting out of that is if there is a clear policy against racist pictures and email in the police system that results in loss of job if you break the policy. If not, sorry, but this is free speech. It might be a good indication that some officers need to be watched and maybe even take some classes on the subject, but you don't go around telling people their jobs are on the line unless they really are.

Its not free speech when a person is in a position that is supposed to protect their citizens. If he was working at as a mailman, or something it would be free speech. But if one is in law enforcement as a judge, politician, police officer, etc. Any clear bias towards a persons ethnicity means that person has bad judgement and should not be in a position that they can abuse it.

It's Australia, so it's probably related to Australia's indigenous population, consider that out of all the common wealth countries, they are the least progressive in dealing with their indigenous population.

"Overland last week acknowledged a small minority of police officers were racist, in response to a report that said police suffered from a “culture of racism.”
In my opinion racism is the overt act of discriminating or singling out with intent to harm someone due to their race. Anything else is simply individual preference, nothing more nothing less. Overland has admitted that some of the police are racist- these racist actions need to be addressed in a public court of law. Hiding or covering up these actions is nothing short af "aiding and abetting".

Well, I am truly shocked. Every Aussie I know or have heard of, is a nice, gentle person. Of course there are the rotten apples in every basket, but we can't generalize about Aussies being racists, as SenatorAcorn - Your Highness - has said. Every country has its share of racist individuals. If you say Australia is a racist country and yours is not - then you are living in Wonderland, Alice.

Australia still had a Whites Only policy when these coppers were growin up. Still a long long way to go.
