I hope for Ferrer's sake this does not wind up in the annals of "Famous Last Words."

What has happened to Mexico? It used to be a wonderful country with truly warm-hearted and hospitable people. It breaks my heart to see what is happening there. Even Colombia never got this bad in the 1980s when the drug lords were controlling the country.

It must be frustrating for the tourism and airline authorities in various countries trying to promote Mexico as a destination. They might as well close their offices.

Yeah, the tennis players may have all the security, but how about the crowd watching? Or the staff? Dead passengers are not really exaggeration...

I still think Colombia was a bit worse than Mexico is now. There are still safe parts of Mexico, and nobody is blowing up federal judges or airliners yet.

Still awful what's happened to Mexico. I used to spend a lot of time there and have a sentimental attachment to the place...

Mexico is going to hell these days. I can imagine people wanting a quiet vacation in the mountains of Eastern Afghanistan as a safer destination than some places in Mexico.

When Acapulco comes to mind I think of Elvis in "Fun in Acapulco", and cliff diving, so this must be a disaster for the tourist trade. Hard to believe what's happening.

I agree, the headline is confusing. Maybe switch the word 'fares' with 'passengers'...

Moderator: The word fare can also mean passenger, so it's fine.

Yes it can mean "passenger" to English speakers of some countries or people in the industry. But if people are finding it confusing, maybe better to edit it according to more common language. This is a site in a non-native English speaking country after all. Such subtle language may be lost on a lot of your readers.

Yes it can mean "passenger" to English speakers of some countries or people in the industry.

"fare" is pretty common English usage for passenger. It's in stories and movies all the time.

Mexico is a great country, sure a few bad taxi drivers on the take from some mafia get their heads chopped off once in a while, this is just part of the drug business, you know nothing really personal really, just your average drug mafia narco chaps, trying to send a message to their rivals down their in the beautiful port of Acapulco. If you are not involved in drugs, selling, distribution etc..you will better to be scared of getting Montezumas revenge, you know, drink bad water in Mexico etc..you will have the runs for a few weeks, but if you are clean, no drugs etc..this is as bad a Mexico can get, or get drunk and stay out in the sun for too long, not good to be too pale and end up with a horrible sunburn.

Mafia scoundrels coming after me with blazing guns and swooshing machetes may mean "nothing personal really," but I would find such an attack uncomfortably personal for sure. As reported almost weekly by the media, the violence in Mexico DOES affect (as in kill) innocent bystanders. Much as I love Mexico, I'm going to stay bien tranquilo out of the country until things calm down. Succumb now to the charms of Mexico and you may well succumb, period.

may I suggest some alternatives for the confusing headline -
1. all's fare in drugs war
2. mexican's using unfare tactics in drug war
3. in fareness to mexicans, I wouldnt want to live there either!
4. taxi using mexicans grin and fare it
