This lone Ecuadorian survivor has to be crazy to even think about staying in Mexico, 70 plus Central and South Americans are killed, this Ecuadorian guy happens to I guess pretend he was already dead, then when the chance to escape he runs for his life, I am Mexican and I know our mafias, they will make sure to hunt this Ecuadorian down, and make sure he does not try to give the police and Mexican army any information about these Zetas. You can cheat death once, but next time we read about this Ecuadorian I am sure if he stays in Mexico, it will only be a matter of time before he is dead meat.PS a humanitarian visa to stay in Mexico?? What a stupid joke!

These are Iraq/Afghanistan casualty rates. The Mexican government had better start using drones armed with missiles if it wants to have any hope of success in reducing the carnage.

Ya know what I think would solve this problem... Guns.

I know, it sounds crazy, but hear me out for a moment. Awhile back Columbia was having similar issues. FARC, and the Cartels were waging a bloody campaign against them. I was down there shortly after they broke the Medellin cartel, and walking down the street in Bogota was an eye opener. Nearly everywhere I looked, people were armed. With everyone armed, apart from random nutcases, people are a lot safer. Gangs lose their power when everyone is armed and can simply shoot back.

Change the law, make it so its illegal not to own a gun. Require everyone to carry. And very soon, the gangs will lose their hold, and the kidnappings will decrease. Then you just have to worry about the random nutcases. Considering the way things are going, and the humongous body count, arming everyone would save a lot of lives.

I don't think carry guns will be very helpful when a car (or two, in this case) explodes. Besides, the police already carry guns and that hasn't stopped them being killed. I really think this is one of the myths of guns. Rather than make things necessarily safer, it has the potential to just increase the number of bullets flying around. More guns or not, these cartels thrive by using fear and intimidation. Carrying a gun doesn't help you if you're shot in the back.

You missed his point, if everyone carries guns you have what is called mad or mutually assured destruction, if a gang attacks a police officer its just the gang and the police, but if everyone is armed and a gang attacks a police officer then the civilians nearby will most likely help defend the police officer.

The reason why police carry guns are targeted is because the police are not every where and because the threat the cartels have of some civilian coming to the aid of their target is not very high.

The other problem with your argument is that it works for cartels, for example you say carrying a gun doesn't help you if you're shot in the back, well then why do cartels carry guns then? Because guns work more often then they don't work.

You talk about how cartels thrive by using fear and intimidation, what could be more intimidating to the cartel or gang then having an entire town/city rise up that is armed against the cartel or gang.

Neither does being unarmed if your shot in the back.

Dear Molenir, Columbia is like that university in New York or that space shuttle, and the South American country full of drugs, mafias and hot chicks is COLOMBIA, no U in Colombia, but I guess I am the only one hear who gets ticked off when even CNN makes these kind of mistakes. More guns? Nah, you get every Mexican citizen to own say, carry a 38 Special, do you think the Mexican MAFIAS will come after you with a little gun?? Heck no! They will hunt you down with everything the USA and the rest of the gun making world can offer, bazookas, grenade launchers, night vision glasses, infra red etc...Mexico is right next to the USA and it cut boths ways, having such an OPEN border.

Yeah, well except for the fact that there is almost no credible evidence that they are smuggling their weapons in through the US. Not only that, the fact that most of those items you mentioned are not even legal for purchase in the US would make things a hell of a lot more complicated. Now if you had said, bulletproof vests, you might have had a point. Still, if everyone was armed, gangs would be much, much less of a threat. You'd mostly have to worry about nutcases, and the gangs would have reason to fear themselves.
