Remarkable that this story on Pakistan is the closest JT can get to actually saying anything about Afghanistan. That country's name does not even get a mention on the page, and yet the reason Pakistan faces suicide attacks by militants comes precisely out of the destabalisation of Pakistan as a result of the US 'war on terror' and particularly the recent strikes by US and allied forces across the Pakistan border which have killed so many Pakistanis.

The real story underlying this story above perhaps is the historical significance of this time. Its seven years since the Bush administration launched “Operation Enduring Freedom”. That was when the relentless bombing of Afghanistan began.

Recently US intelligence agencies have concluded that the situation in the devastated country is on “a downward spiral,” with prospects poor for stabilizing the US-backed government and any chance for a militarily defeat of the growing armed resistance.
