RIP.
As for the captain and several crew who went to shore before the evacuation procedures even started, I hope they get to walk the plank.

I hadn't read about this in detail so I was not aware that the captain and some crew had bailed before the evacuation procedures formally began. For that, I'm sure, and I hope, they'll be in some serious trouble. As for the 29, I hope at least a few, if not all, can be found alive. To those dead, RIP.

It seems that as the coast guard and other crew members were busy helping out the survivors, the captain was already onshore doing interviews.

I wonder how this guy became a captain. Did he use mafia friends to get the job ?

The captain diverted from the programmed course which would have taken the ship away from the island. It had previously sailed close to the island but never neared than 500m. Once control of an emergency evacuation is lost it's everyone for themselves even though traditionally the captain is the last to evacuate. Once the ship went over there wasn't much anyone could do. But the decision to sail to the shore saved lives, had it stayed in deeper water the ship would have sank.

What happened to 'women and children' first?

I think that was the protocol that was followed.....See how the captain of the ship left first?

Salvaging the ship is a job for Halliburton.

He sailed closer to shore so that the head waiter was able to wave to his family had he stayed on the regular course this tragedy would never have happened.
If you are responsible for all of those on your ship, then you are responsible for all of them until they have left your ship. He could not ensure a safe evacuation if he wasn't there. There were some members of staff who have come out of this with a lot of credit for the way in which they helped the passengers.

Tragedy for all involved, but - man! - talk about a scuba diver's dream!

Death toll up to 7. Pretty soon it will be back down to 3, perhaps fall into the negative, then rise into the teens. I am going to build a roller coaster. And I am going to name it the Concordia Death Toll!

Too bad he did not say "Careful, we are extremely close to an underwater reef called School Rocks, which I, being from Giglio, know well."
One might think the captain and waiter might be a little "close" for the captain to pull this stunt, if you know what I mean.
Nothing compares to even one life lost, but you know how much money just went down the tubes as this ship is a total loss? 570 million U.S. dollars! Half a billion! That is quite a toy the captain decided to play with!

Sadly, that is the main reason that ensures the captain will be screwed, not the loss of life. But at least the captain IS screwed, regardless of how you slice it: he was taking people on a joy-ride that resulted in death, he wrecked a half a billion dollar ship, and he ran out before the evacuation and refused to go back and help. This guy is utter scum, and how he became captain I know not.

The lost of the ship will most likely be paid for by Lloyd's of London.
